Pony’s life is changed by when Dallas couldn’t take it. Near the end of chapter 9, they go visit Johnny in his final moments, until Johnny passed away “The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died” (Hinton 148). This made Dally furious, and bolted out to the car without Pony “He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall” (Hinton 149). Pony then walked out and after hours of doing nothing, he was asked if Pony wanted a ride “I might have stumbled around all night except for a man who asked me if I wanted a ride.” (Hinton 151). He arrived home with Steve, Soda, and Darry just resting after the rumble, and Pony told them about Dallas until the phone rang, with Dally on the other side. In paragraph 3, Pony and Johnny were having a deep conversation about their mother and father “Mom would bake some more chocolate cakes and dad would drive the pickup out early to feed the cattle”(Hinton 48). But then they accidentally drifted off to sleep on the small hill. Johnny soon woke Pony up and went their separate ways.Pony goes home and finds an angry Darry waiting for him. Darry then slapped Pony across the face “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (Hinton 50). After this he ran away with Johnny to the nearest park, questioning why would he do that? This action caused Pony to rethink on how he sees himself, making it seem that no one can stand
