William of Tyre was born in the Kingdom of Jerusalem around 1130. William grew up in the area which became known as "the crusader states", which were the towns and cities that were captured during the Crusades, and he studied at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. William was of humble heritage but showed great promise and became a protege of the archbishop of Tyre who arranged to send him to Europe to study law, where he studied in Paris and Bologna. William eventually returned to the holy land in 1165 and he became a religious official in the city of Tyre, where he also served as an advisor and tutor to the Christian lords. Consequently, William of Tyre was appointed chancellor of the Kingdom, and was finally made archbishop
