Imagine when you were fifteen years old your parents told you that your family was in debt. How would your life change? How would you change? The challenges I faced when I was in high school shaped the person I am today and taught me that life is not as easy as it seems. Because we were in debt, my parents worked a lot. I realized that I needed to step up or my siblings would not get fed or do their homework. This experience helped to sharpen my skills and abilities as well as challenged me to do better in school. It all started when my father was laid off from his job at Titan Tire Factory in Freeport, Il. For weeks, we struggled with not having enough money for food or gas. In one long sad Christmas break, my family racked in a lot of credit card debt. When my parents told me about this debt I was shocked. When my father did go back to work, he took all the overtime he could get, and therefore, was not home a lot. My mother also got a job to help pay for my sister's college loans. Seeing how my parents and even my sister had struggled financially, I applied for a job at Dairy Queen in Monroe, Wisconsin. Fast food jobs may not seem important or even difficult, but with this being my first job I had never experienced working for money. When I got the job, I was both excited and nervous. The main reason I wanted a job was to start saving money for college. My father was also hired at a car plant, Chrysler, in Belvidere. We were now slowly climbing out of our huge hole of credit card debt. Now that I am making money for myself, I have a choice every day to either spend this money or save it, when I do spend my money I try to spend it
