Lost, alone, depression, confusion, and suicide. These are all words that teenagers think throughout the duration of their life. These feelings are often concealed and bottled up, due to the fear that if one were to share them, they would be rejected. They try and look for ways they can understand these feelings, while trying to avoid the possibility of opening up about them. However, if they cannot turn to family or friends, what are they going to do? There is a solution for these individuals: Life Happens written by Kathy McCoy, Ph.D., and Charles Wibbelsman, M.D. This novel is a written guide that has every answer to practically any question a young teenager may have about love, sexuality, etc. It is a wonderful guide that has real …show more content…
For each chapter, it gave a checklist of different things, and it allows the reader to interact with the text. For example, when the book would talk about depression, it gave a checklist of symptoms for the different types of depression, and it allowed readers to give themselves a mental checklist to see if they could possibly have any of those symptoms. This in turn, gave the book a very strong message. It helps teach young teenagers who are struggling with things like suicidal thoughts, depression, thoughts about sexuality, and it gives them advice on how to turn their negative situation into a positive one. It also tells teens that they are not alone, as in the beginning of each chapter, they have actual quotes from kids across the countries that are struggling with the exact same problem. The novel also has quotes from professionals who specialize in certain things, such as teen depression. This is very useful because it allows the reader to open up their eyes and realize that there is hope. “We hear from many teens in pain: through letters written to us by readers of The New Teenage Body Book, from patients who share their emotional as well as physical pain and from young people we meet during visits to high schools,” (McCoy 3-4). This helps readers see that there is light at the end of the tunnel and they will not stay in the dark forever. This book not only is a good read for the reasons listed above, but it …show more content…
It allows one to step back, take a deep breath, and find advice on how to handle their specific situation. It addition, it really is unlike any book. It is a book one would not expect to be a giant advice column on serious topics kids today are aware of, such as suicide, deciding if one is gay or straight, relationships, etc. This book is also perfect to read, as it can give readers advice that they can use to help a close family member, or a close friend in need. It does something that most books do not do; it gives real situations that are coming from real people, and it gives advice coming from real medical professionals. This shows how what is being written in this book is not biased. It is real information, and nothing that was buttered up to sound a certain way. Whenever one needs another source of advice, other than advice from a family friend, a friend, or a family member, reading Life Happens will wipe those tears away and make the pain of feeling lost, go

But it also is a reflection of the imperfection if human beings and darker side of life, like poverty and death; by the end of the first chapters we already have some suicides, Doc finds a dead girl on the beach etc. Because all the stories happen in the same neighborhood the book gives you a sense of community, no matter how different the characters seem to be, for example Doc is a marine biologist, Mack and the boys are just a group of bums, Lee Chong is the owner of a grocery store where you can buy almost everything, and Dora is the owner of a brothel. As the chapters unravel as you read you start to have an understanding of the characters in this little community; Lee Chong is shown to be hard headed but at the same time kind hearted, Mack and the boys are described by the book as ideals, even though they don’t have much they seem to live life in peace and free of the worries of modern…
