As a result of the growth in population, there became a higher demand for goods and products. The production of in house, private manufacturing were no longer suitable for the demands of the growing society. Therefore, factories started being built and inventions in production equipment were evolving. Factories were primarily built in urban areas so that there would be enough room development around factories. These large factories enabled companies to mass produce goods to fulfill high demands in a shorter span of time than previously achievable. The new factories required tons of workers to operate them everyday. Working in these factories was a dangerous and laborious task for the workers. They worked long shifts spanning 12-16 hours with work weeks as long six or seven days. The life of a worker was incredibly tough and demanding and even unfair to say the least. Workers were only permitted to take breaks when granted permission by the owner. In Addition, factory work was dangerous because of all the new unsafe machinery being operated at one time in a joint location. This caused many problems and tragedies to some because of accidents that occurred during work. The factory work industry was a very competitive one. If someone would get injured during work and was unable to effectively perform their job the owner would replace that worker.
