In the eyes of Abdul and some Haitians, it is a situation to take advantage of. These people are known as trash pickers. Even though they make money while working, they are also doing it for the betterment of their community. The government of Cité Soleil is getting involved in getting rid of trash as well. Haiti banned the import of polyethylene and polystyrene in the year 2012, but it has not made a difference in the situation (David Hatch, "Citiscope", 2014). The government is still working tirelessly on the trash problem because, "It presents a health hazard by causing sewers to overflow in poor neighborhoods during storms" (David Hatch, "Citiscope", 2014). They earn money by selling their findings to other citizens. The trash pickers of Cité Soleil get their income through a program that offers opportunity to those who have no hope. "The program is funded by government and the private sector" (David Hatch, "Citiscope", 2014). Stated earlier, the government of Cité Soleil is working to reduce the trash in their city. The Cité Soleil trash picking program is a prime example of their environment saving actions.
