Introduction

When it comes to aging it can be interesting to look back at an individual’s life and see all of the different changes that have occurred. The goal of the Life Course Perspective assignment was to discuss the turning points, transitions and how the relationships of the individual have changed over time. For this assignment I looked at the life trajectory of my Grandma, Doris. She is currently 78 years of age and is currently married to my grandpa, Larry. She spends her days as a homemaker and a caretaker to my grandpa. I used to see my grandma at least once a week or more as a child because she was my babysitter; she lives only a few miles from my parents. She was sad when all of her children moved out but she had her grandchildren over several times a week so the house always felt like it was fairly full. She mentions the death of both of her parents but they didn’t seem as significant to her as they didn’t occur suddenly. The big points for her was when her mother started experiencing dementia and she tried to take care of her on her own. That was a big turning point in her life because it was after that she lost her mother and her husband started to experience more health problems as well. The first time her husband had to stay in a nursing home for rehab was a big transition for her because she had to start making decisions on her …show more content…
When my grandma went through various things in her life the best way she found to cope was through prayer and bible verses. She mentioned in the interview that back when she was going through her depression spell there really wasn’t counseling available, you just had to find a way to get through it. Her way of dealing with this was to focus on her religion. She also mentioned this when I asked her how she was able to cope with my grandpa and his worsening health. The video mentions that many adults need to be more able to ask for help when they needed it. She said that even though she is capable of doing many things there are so many times where she has needed to be able to ask for help. This really connects with the aging with dignity aspect of the video. She needed to be able to get what she needed out of life without being afraid to ask for things and this was something that she wasn’t able to do when she was
