Women can choose to use a hormonal method of birth control or a barrier method. The hormonal method includes the pill, a shot, an implant, a vaginal ring, an IUD, and a patch. The reason behind the effectiveness of hormonal methods is because the contraceptive either contains estrogen and progestin. Synthetic estrogen prevents the pituitary gland from hormones to prevent ovulation. Synthetic progestin prevents the pituitary gland from producing a hormone to prevent egg release, makes the uterus lining unable to hold a fertilized egg, and thickens the mucus in the cervic.()Each contraceptive has one or the other, few have both. Depending on the reliability of the person contraceptives that require people to be responsible the percentages go down. Perfect use of a contraceptive lowers the possibility of pregnancy. If a person does not take the pill every day regularly or does not put the condom on correct the percentage of pregnancy increases. It is said that “condoms are 98 percent effective” when used properly. If a male does not perfectly use the condom the “failure rates increase to 18 percent” () People that inconsistently use contraceptives have almost as high of a percentage as nonusers. Non users have a 54 percentage chance compared to the 41 percent chance of inconsistent users.
