Personal Narrative: My Experience With Keratoconus

Improved Essays
I have had many life changing experiences but there is one that has impacted me the most. It is my experience with Keratoconus. One day during 2016 I woke up and my vision was on my right eye was covered by a something white and cloudy. It turned out to be a scar in my eye caused by Keratoconus. Keratoconus is an eye disease a person is born with that affects the cornea by making it slope instead of being round, and for the most part a cornea transplant is needed as the disease further progresses and damages the cornea. This was the case for me, and I got a cornea transplant on my right eye in September 2016, when I was 15. The surgery changed my life in many ways both short term and long term.
To start it was the first surgery I ever had

I couldn’t open my eye after the surgery and trying to hurt. I went to eye doctor a few days after. The doctor removed my patch. He then told me to open my eye. I was surprised to see that my vision had already improved. I couldn’t go to school for the week. Catching up on all the work was difficult. My eye was also blood red for one month. A lot of people in school would ask me about my eye. I had to sleep with an eye patch every night. The eye patch made it very hard for me to sleep. Thankfully all these effects were only short term.
After the surgery everything seemed to be going good. Suddenly the pressure in my eye was high which is bad because it can cause glaucoma. Because of this I had to get another surgery. I got another surgery sometime in 2017. I don’t know what the surgery is called, but I know it had to do with tube being put in my eye. The tubes purpose was to lower my eye pressure. After this surgery my eye was again really red and swollen. Even after this surgery I still suffer from high eye pressure, and I might have to get another surgery

Despite most patients having great vision one year after the surgery, this sadly isn’t the case for me. I still struggle to see making school very difficult, and there is nothing the doctors can do but wait. Despite the fact that most people that have cornea transplant having stable vision after one year, this wasn’t the case for me. “|It| could take anywhere from a couple of months up to a year to have stable vision in the eye that receives the donor tissue.”(Cornea Transplant: What To Expect). This tells me that my cornea is healing slower than most peoples. It has been over a year, and my vision has yet to improve. I also have had to put at least six eye drops a day. The number of drops sometimes goes up or down.

Although this cornea transplant has brought a lot of bad moments to my life I know that it will be worth it. I still have two more small surgeries that will have to go through in the future. These don’t scare me because no of them can be as bad as the cornea transplant. This experience has really taught me that we shouldn’t take our eyesight for granted. You don’t realize how much your vision can lower the quality of your life if you can’t see well until you experience it for yourself. I will definitely appreciate my vision if it ever becomes good

The reason this was done is that if the “good” eye was not patched following the surgery, Holly’s weaker eye would be continually battling with the “good” eye for brain space and to form the necessary cortical connections to function properly. With the “good” eye patched, Holly’s weaker eye has the opportunity to form the necessary neural connection without negatively impacting the “good” eye. The textbook supports this standpoint. It relates that if a child is born blind at birth, brain space that would ordinarily be utilized to form visual processing is taken up by other senses, such as hearing and touch (Belsky, 2016, p.75). In other words, the brain “uses it or loses it” if brain space is not utilized to build and strengthen neural connections for its given purpose, in this case visual processing.…
