I was born in a family of five, and because my parents were a teacher, I didn’t have difficulty focusing myself towards hard work and discipline especially in studies. However, choosing medicine was a different experience with no medical background in family and expenses needed for that and when I reflect, it hasn’t all been just the hard-work done by me based on my determination but sacrifice on my parents’ behalf too despite the economic pressures and their limited income. They have always been a constant source of support and encouragement for me to achieve what I wanted to achieve. I kept myself focused on the goals and dreams I had seen so long, but it was the opportunity which helped me revive my determination just before it went off and this opportunity was provided to me by my university alumni association when I got an email that I have been selected for a scholarship to help me in regard to US residency appreciating my consistency and determination. It was a huge help towards my goal to carve my dreams into physical existence and without this opportunity my determination might have been unable to make me write these words as part of residency application. Considering my background, I have come a long way and have demonstrated that I am a survivor. As a child this manifested as a love for Mathematics. Similar to math, internal medicine is also mysterious and complex at first but full of beautiful patterns once proficiency is obtained. I really enjoyed differential equations and treatment theories. Craze for analytical approach while making and tracing differentials drawn me to internal medicine. I am fascinated by the subject matter and the fact that I can positively impact the lives of a broad category of patients. During my internal medicine clerkship rotations, I was thrilled to find that not only I was good at making connections between threads to reach a final diagnosis in complex systems based on wide knowledge but also at personal connection with the patient. I still remember a patient’s attendant in oncology department during my house job, who was so exhausted by the condition of his son and was so irritable that he listened to no one but I was able to calm him down by sympathetic counseling and later on, he appreciated that. It really gave me a complete sense of satisfaction that I am now ready to begin my ride on this roller coaster towards being a physician. I believe that solutions aren’t made only in numbers and spreadsheets, but in human connections and establishing a relationship. I learned that from my experience as an intern that as a physician, I shall have to deal with a human being and not only the disease he is suffering from. I have spent last
