The poem “Patterns” by Amy Lowell is about a woman awaiting the return of her fiancé. Although the outcome of this visual is tragic it is also beautifully displayed with unique description. This poem focuses on a woman’s reaction to her fiancé’s death during war. This poem starts off with the woman walking through a garden in an expensive wedding dress. She admired the flowers and their beautiful patterns portrayed on them. Further on in the poem, she talks about how in a month her fiancé was going to become her husband. After this, the woman finds out that her long awaited fiancé has been killed I war. After receiving this tragic news, the woman feels an over powering emotion of grief and sorrow. She feels as if the expensive dress she wearing has become a waste now that she is not getting married anymore. There are many symbols that are portrayed in parts of this poem. Some of the portrayed were the elegant brocade worn by the woman. For example, brocaded gown symbolizes the social boundaries and restrictions imposed on her (Dinneen). This poem’s perspective is a free write about the types of emotions that might be evoked by the loss of a loved one during war (Feldman, Kevin, Vaughan, and Kinsella 719).
