Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the village of Groot Zundert, in the northern region of the Netherlands. As a child, Van Gogh had shown little interest in art but at the age of sixteen he moved to The Hauge, where he worked for his uncle as a clerk for the art dealers Goupil and Co. for the next four years. However, after the influence of his father, a Protestant Pastor, Van Gogh left the firm to pursue theology studies, however, Van Gogh never completed his studies in theology and mission work and instead went on to become an artist. During His artistic training Van Gogh never abandoned his interest in religion. Van Gogh was also haunted by episodes of illness that would reoccur throughout his life which led him to enter himself into the Saint-Rémy Hospital in May of 1889.
