When most people think of individuals that have been labeled sex offenders in their area, there is not much remorse or empathy felt toward them. All sex offenders are characterized as child molesting sex enthusiasts when in reality, that’s not always factual. When a person commits a crime qualifying them as a federal sex offender, their life has changed forever in the worst way. The magnitude of the crime is almost always irrelevant and treatment is level in the eyes of the law. Every sex offender is required by law to register on an online database for sex offenders as noted by the Notification Act, and possibly undergo psychological and physical treatment methods as well as probation upon their release. However, the treatment of sex offenders after their release is tragically different than normal criminals. Many offenders that are considered a “high risk” are forced to enter into a psychiatric facility to be mentally evaluated, medicated, and psychoanalyzed until they are deemed fit for release into the community. In the video “Sex Offenders broadcast by Associated Press Video Collection, many medical professionals stated that these means of treatment are inadequate and unhelpful to the individuals that undergo it. Many sex offenders admitted are diagnosed with some sort of psychological disorder and are refused admittance into the outside world. They are examined until deemed fit for release, which is rare in cases such as these. Many inmates feel as if they have no way of escaping their fate. In the video source, the man being interviewed states that he “wants to be castrated so he won’t commit any more crimes in the eyes of the law”. His desire to be castrated was evaluated by a legal advisor and was decided that he could not make a decision such as this to “escape” detainment. His desire comes from the feeling of forced entrapment; he thinks that if he is castrated, he will be released into society again, far away from the current psychological facility. Because he acts this way, it is logical to observe the notion that he states this by force. He is backed into a corner and coerced into “thinking he wants this procedure done, when in fact it is an escape plan”.
