Letter from a Birmingham Jail, by Martin Luther King Jr., is a response to a group of Alabama clergymen, who critique King’s actions in protesting racial segregation and injustice in Birmingham. I Lost My Talk, by Rita Joe, is a poem that uses an extended metaphor to highlight the identity crisis of many Aboriginal people who grew up within the residential school system. Both poems, through the use of the three persuasive appeals, logos, ethos, and pathos, and by addressing their opposition, seek to encourage racial reform. Logos, King’s most frequent persuasive appeal in the letter, is critical to establishing himself as a voice of reason. Throughout the article, he rationally explains the reasoning behind the need for action in Birmingham.…
Life for a slave in the book, “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson wasn’t always easy. There were different types of slaves in this book and they all had different jobs that were very difficult for some of them. Some were even sold to other people and some slaves had to work as labourers which made them have a lot of injuries that sometimes led to death. Many slaves’ life included plantations, small farms, and their city. They all were different especially when they were all from different parts of the world and different colonies.…
From February 1864 until the end of the Civil War in April 1865, Andersonville Prison was a Confederate military prison where captured Union soldiers were being held. Andersonville Prison, the most famous military prison during the Civil War, left a mark on the South and should not be forgotten. Andersonville as a field with a log stockade bordering it and a stream intersected it, which served the prisoners both a sanitation system and water supply (Thomason). The stream soon became polluted with human waste over the months and it was the prisoner's main source of drinking water. The prisoners experienced many diseases and illnesses like respiratory diseases, diarrhea, and scurvy.…
Jacoby affirms that many offenders are subjected to prison life where they are raped, beaten or murdered, yet they are there for non-violent offenses. Structure of the argument Reason 1: flogging is the more humane punishment in contrast with the prison. Evidence: Public whipping will sway juvenile convict away from criminal profession (example)…
Beginning construction in 1878, Folsom Prison located in California came to be due to a decision made by California legislature in 1858. The decision to build a new prison was made because of “ serious overcrowding in San Quentin”( “Folsom Prison Museum Brochure” 1). With being one of the first maximum security prisons in the Nation, Folsom has a rich and impeccable history. In the beginning it had 1,700 cells, the walls were approximately 8’ by 4’ in size. The doors on the cells were solid iron with openings 6” by 2” for viewing.…

How does fear fuel bravery, when fear is the total opposite of bravery in the novel Chains, written by Laurie Halse Anderson? In Chains, Isabel, a thirteen-year-old slave, feels fear, but manages and overcomes her fear when she takes action to fulfill her desires to become free. However, Isabel and her sister, Ruth, were sold to the malicious Locktons before reaching their lawyer. I believe that the author, Jeff Jacoby, made many good points as to why the regular system isn’t working to decrease the number of criminals, however not enough was said about why flogging should be brought back. First of all, I believe flogging is inhumane and a completely outdated method of punishing criminals. The writer believes that a public whipping would humiliate criminals enough to not want to commit a crime again. However I believe that it’s just a more advanced way of spanking a child, hoping it will teach them a lesson. I personally don’t think a one time public flogging would change a criminal's way’s any more than some jail time would.…

In a book titled “The New Jim Crow” by author Michelle Alexander, opened my eyes to the evolved new system of oppression. This concept was introduced as the Mass incarceration of America in a colorblind society. through thoughtful consideration; laws and legislation keep this new Jim Crow planted in our society. These individuals affected are black men and throughout history have never had the opportunity of an unoppressed American society. Overall this issue didn’t begin overnight it took time and a president to declare a literal War on Drugs that began a systematic roundup of these black men.…
The growth of African American’s going to jail What is the number of African Americans going in the system? The crime rate has gone up by the time. With recent talks on Capitol Hill of an upcoming criminal justice reform, it is not surprising to see topics on sentencing structure, police ethics and practices, and the future of the criminal justice system in the news headlines. One of the biggest topics is the overwhelming prison population in state and federal prisons. This has been a prominent topic for some time now. While some want to curtail the prison community others seem to think there is not a visible complication. Those who sense the prison population or the amount of people under supervision of the criminal justice system is of no concern, more than likely do not understand the impact the population has on criminal justice professionals or where the funding for these institutions…
What is the language? The language is a most powerful weapon that we can used for to create a great impact on others; moreover, it could be influenced over and over the time. In “Politics and the English Language”, George Orwell stated that language is a reflection of our culture and society. On the contrary, in “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Martin Luther King, Jr. shows his belief about the segregation and tried to bring his community up to against the unjust law. In the both texts, George Orwell and Martin Luther King, Jr. both shows that political leaders use the language to empower the individuals in society by making an encouragement to bring them together and convince them to believe as his or her belief.…
