On a train ride death strikes. Liesel Meminger's brother was only six, when on a train ride to Munich. Liesel was asleep next to him dreaming of Hitler, when she woke she witnessed horror. Her Baby brother was snatched by the claws of death. Liesel then awoke her mom, and as the two lamented, death just sat and watched. Liesel at first had a hard time with trust, but as others opened up to her. She opened up, Liesel formed relationships and turned her frustrations to those who put her down.
Liesel is unable to read and write at the beginning of the story. Nonetheless, she didn't hesitate to pick up a book when the opportunity presented itself. After the loss of her brother, Liesel became aware of her own self worth. She sticks up for herself when beat down. Liesel fights her illiteracy, and comes to realize how much strength words can hold. She loathed the power in Germany, and how hitler uses words in such an evil way. In the correct hand, words can be a beautiful thing. When learning the alphabet with Hans Hubermann is when she develops one of her best relationships. Liesel uses books to ease tension during the toughest of times, and uses words as an escape.
