After reading The Book Thief, I have concluded that the theme is the ability words have to dominate us; the author gives a large amount of examples throughout the whole book. Beginning with the relationship of Liesel and Hans Hubermann, when learning the alphabet as well as the concept of reading, “…but it was not so much school who helped me to read. It was papa.”(Zusak, 64). Hans stayed up late to give her lessons so she would be able to catch up with the other students and not feel like an outcast in the classroom. “…Liesel’s eyes grew larger. She had done this at school, in the kindergarten class, but this time was better. She was the only one there…it was nice to watch papa’s hands as he wrote the words.”(Zusak, 67).
