Lies And Irony In Shakespeare's Othello

Lies. They can do more damage than people think.... such as escalating into deaths of human beings. The play Othello is about a lying man named Iago. He manipulates many people into thinking he is an honest person. Iago’s mission is to try and take over Othello’s position, who has a higher power than him. Things start to go crazy when Iago lies so many times, that people end up dying and going insane. In the play Othello, Iago lies so much, he starts to enjoy the sight of people suffering from his vicious fibs. Towards the beginning of the play, Iago pretends to love Othello, and pretend he wouldn't do anything bad to him. Iago has a mission to overtake Othello’s position, since he is a higher class than Iago, which is going to take some lying. Iago begins by saying, “were I the Moor, I would not be Iago. In following him, I follow but myself” (1,1,63). This is him making his evil plan of taking Othello’s position. Iago then states, “I must show out a flag and sign of love- which is indeed, but sign (1,1,173). Iago is planning on taking Othello’s position by lying, saying he loves him. He moves his ways back to Othello. Clawing at Othello and Desdemona’s relationship.He manages to convince Othello, that the love of his life is cheating on him with Cassio. Iago mentions to Cassio that Desdemona has a handkerchief available to give to any man she pleases. “By heaven, I would most gladly have forgotten it....Boding to all- he had my handkerchief” (IV, i,22 and 25) Othello is starting to break down at the thought that his lover might not be loyal. He feels that it haunts him like a nightmare. Iago starts to enjoy seeing Othello crash down and start to go crazy. Othello then asks Iago to fulfill the task of murdering Cassio, while he himself murders
