• What are your immediate thoughts after reading the article?

My first thought on this article was pure fascination. I have heard about this before and didn’t give it much thought. Without reading and understanding another point of view, I believed it was nonsense. After reading the article I feel this is going to be a big political issue that we are going to see more of in the next ten years. At first, I thought this would be an easy assignment but after reading the chapter and article I saw both pros and cons on the topic of requiring a license to parent. I knew I would not be able to follow the assignment guidelines and properly argue my belief on the topic, therefore I needed to take a few days to process the information. And yet today

• Do you think parents should be required to have a license or not?

Should people be required to have a license to procreate? I am going to say yes. Anything in life requires us to have some form of license, education, ticket, etc. Why would we not require a license for one of the most important jobs in the world? I do need to make it clear that I will not support a parenting license if it means there will be outrageous tests, fees, income, or intelligence guidelines to obtain the license. I believe that would be inhumane however, I do believe that before becoming a parent, it

When becoming a parent, you hold an obligation to care for the child and their well-being. I believe parents should require a license so that Americans can work together towards reducing or eliminating the threat of abuse and neglect on children. While the ability to procreate is a natural born right, we also need to guarantee the well-being of each child. There is an ethical responsibility to us all to make sure that children are loved and cared for. Without proper regulations, America is not able to protect children and we will continue to see neglect and poverty on the

As a child, there is no better feeling than having the freedom to go out and do whatever it is you want. In the article, The Case for Free-Range Parenting by Wergin Clemens we come to find out a different method of parenting (permissive) than the one that was mentioned earlier. The author explains how a child should be able to go out and explore because that is how the child is going to learn new things by experiencing the things life has to offer. He would rather not bother her or get in the way of the things she wants to do simply because, if life throws her a curveball he wants her to learn on her own what to do and how to react towards it. Although, this article sparks a major controversy because parents are now more concerned about letting…

Parents are the foundational tool for developing babies from their state of untouched potential to the complex human beings required for the existence of a harmonious society. However, not all individuals believe society should make parenting an automatic right. In his essay, “Licensing Parents”, Hugh LaFollette makes the argument that because parenting is an activity that can potentially be harmful to others in society, it should necessitate acquiring a license as other potentially harmful activities - such as driving or practicing medicine - do. Utilizing Center for Disease Control statistics on child abuse in the United States, LaFollette argues that in order to avoid bringing harm to children, parents must be “competent.” However, his…
