I was born on September 29, 1998. A fact so simple, yet just a couple of years ago, I would have said that this piece of information is enough for anyone to know who I am. According to astrology, I am a Libra. I am sociable, indecisive, and diplomatic. As a child, reading these horoscopes forced me to examine myself and decide whether I fit the characteristics I was apparently supposed to identify with. I allowed these assumptions to dictate the kind of person I should be, rather than just acting naturally. Expectations, such as horoscopes, can easily influence how a person behaves, and my willingness to comply with other people’s standards prevented me from exploring my true interests. However, once I decided that I do have voice and my personality cannot be summarized into a paragraph in some teen magazine, I was able to discover my love for music and performance art.

I was pressured by adults and children around me to speak up and be more social. Having received this comment numerous times, I began to believe there was a problem with me and I had to fix it. Libras are confident. Libras are “social butterflies. I needed to fit the mold. So with other people’s opinions in mind, I asked my parents to sign me up for a theater summer camp as a way for me to “come out of my shell”. On my first day of camp, I could sense that I was not in my proper environment. The children there were so outgoing and extroverted. With their Broadway musical T-shirts and their scripts always by their side, these kids were so ready to break out into song and dance without fear of ridicule. Although I admired the kids’ enthusiasm for the arts, I always knew that I was not a singer and I was not an actor. I did not find my strength in speaking out. I would rather let my actions be my
