Mary Beth Norton goes in to great detail in her piece of literature she wrote in 1980, Liberty’s Daughters: The Revolutionary Experience of American Women about American women from 1750 to the 1800s. She goes into detail how woman had few if any rights and were degenerated by others before the war. After the Revolutionary War, women were more active in the political world and had more value than before. Women’s role started to change during this time, impacting them in both negative and positively. During the women faced abandonment, abuse, and in the end were more respected because of the war and other things going on at the time (Norton 72).

Recent studies have shown that rape can cause a woman’s self-esteem and feelings of self-worth to drop especially when they have no one to turn to, in this case their husbands and fathers who are at war (Violence Against Women). After the war some woman became quick to realize that they were affected all the same as the men, meaning that they should get equal treatment. These lead women to go in the direction of boycotts, petitions, and famous female political groups. Women were able to have more control over their lifestyle, choosing to divorce and marry as they please and had a far greater access to education and jobs because of this (Norton 81, 82). Mary Beth targeted America in 1980’s to show that women were making changes ever since the 1700’s. That war was the cause of this, just like the war that took place years before Norton’s piece was published. This piece must have had some impact on America as a whole considering the women’s rights movements that occurred later in the 1980’s (The Regan Years). However some people could argue that Mary Beth Norton is biased on this topic because she is a female and the topic pertains to why women acted the way they did. People tend to blame things on others because it is easier than blaming them, for example Hitler blaming the Jews and Blacks for the problems going on in Germany. Norton could simply have written that the British and the men are to blame for the bad that has occurred such as the sexual harassment and abandonment that took place. On the other hand, Norton has received the Allen Nevins Prize for the best written dissertation in American history in 1970, so it is highly unlikely that she would let her views get in the way of her work (Encyclopedia). Her point of view could come into play affected her word choice when it came to the British because Mary Beth
