Liberty and Justice are ideals that light the path to peace. I believe liberty and justice have been purchased for us by the blood and sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom. These are blessings that most Americans take for granted. We did not see firsthand the price of that our soldiers paid to afford us these freedoms, so we often think they are natural born rights. Those of us fortunate enough to call America home enjoy these liberties without thought. However, it is important for us to think about how America has forged the path to freedom at home and abroad. An important aspect of enjoying our freedoms is respecting the fact that there must be limits on how far we can take it. It is important for us to show the world that a democratic society can handle these freedoms in a mature and responsible way. Recently, the State of California decided that High School mascot names that offend the cultural sensitivities of a specific group of people must be changed. As much as it has disappointed many people in our community, I agree that it is time for the Redskin name of my High School to be changed. If the name offended another minority group that has more popularity than it would have been settled a long time ago. Since Andrew Jackson sent Native Americans on the Trail of Tears in 1829, the feelings of Native Americans have been treated as second rate.. It is vital for America to include all races and backgrounds into the American family and open all doors to the American dream.
