The effect of Deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Study of Liberia’s Vast Rain forest

Liberia is located in West Africa and is comprised of vast natural resources which include areas of one of Africa’s largest rainforest which is interconnected to the forests of neighboring countries. Agricultural activities, including; both legal and illegal logging, settlement urbanization and mining, to name a few, continue to negatively contribute to causing deforestation. This process often leads to destructive environmental activities that create numerous negative environmental consequences and the inhabitant who live in the region. It is important to clearly state that the introduction of modern agricultural and other man-made activities are the hallmark of deforestation thus leading to the rapid depletion of Liberia’ rainforest. Although deforestation has been in existence for many years, the increased demand for wood and wood products on the international market has negatively impacted the Liberia’s forest cover and affected this Sub- Saharan region of Africa. Research have shown that that deforestation leads to several communities and environmental problems which also includes the loss of various forms of life that inhabit the region. Therefore, as a graduate student in environmental policy, it is vital for me to advocate for the implementation reforestation programs that will help government to take steps to prevent continual deforestation which will protect the environment in a sustainable way. They should work with international organizations to support programs intended to protect forest resources by conducting and participating in reforestation
