Liberating The Students Voice Analysis

"Dumdiddleydumdum, dumdum" is the riff that has inspired multiple songs and many artists. In "Liberating the Students Voice" Mark Holding explains to his students how this applies to college essays. They all must follow a set of rules but in the end, they are all completely different. This seemed very interesting to me since I have never seen it in that way. For instance, The Who and Bow Wow Wow are both from complete two different music genres but they somehow found a way to use the same riff that Bo Diddley created in 1955. This caught my eye because he made it so easy to understand and relate too.
When we write a college essay it has to follow a specific format, appeal to the reader and not sound like every other essay. It shows that just

Journal 5 “I Just Want To Be Average” is the Essay I most identify with. Wanting to fit in and be part of a group. Also, how the school and school system can have a large influence on a student’s life. I seem to have the analogous issues with the classroom as Mike Rose does. How he had a hard time concentrating on and trying to enjoy the material being taught.…

Reflecting on the college application process, I noticed that the college essays were stressed very highly, but all the prompts ask for the same thing. Whether they are asking for an eventful moment, your passion, a hobby, or a chosen outsourced prompt, many students seem to convey the same messages in their essays. To get around this, one must ask a more inconspicuous prompt where the student’s character shows through their unique ideas. A prompt that is universal, conveys a meaning, and is always answered uniquely must ask for a narrative: Write a creative story. Walking through the woods one night, Agatha Johansson could not wait to arrive at her friend’s house.…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

I enjoyed reading how education, literacy, industrialization helped form the nation as a whole, while it developed communities, families and individuals as well. Johnson’s essay taught me the importance of the government that was created and the changes that was made to form the political parties we vote from today. I also found it interesting the parallels between the presidential candidates of yesterday to the ones of today. Last but not least, Frederickson’s was my least favorite as it shared another one of America’s skeleton in the closet so to speak, these are the things we do not talk about when we discuss history as it shows the brutality and the selfishness of the people that began our nation. It is disheartening to read about what the founding Fathers chose to do to create a new world.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

The Sanctuary of School The essay I chose to write was over the short article of “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry. In this story it talks about the author Lynda Barry’s experience with the school from a young age. She talks about growing up in a home with her mom and her dad having money issues, relatives that kept moving in, her brother and her sleeping on the couch, and the constant fighting going on. She explains how she didn’t feel safe at home so she talks about school being a safe haven for her, and how lucky she was that she had Mrs. LeSane and Mr. Gunderson.…

A young freshman in college is anxiously checking her schedule for her first semester. She examines her paper carefully and sees she is taking English 112. She stopped and asked herself why she would take English 112? She ponders for a reason to take this writing class after she already took at least four English classes in her high school years, plus English 111. She felt she already ‘knew’ how to write.…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Essay writing is an excellent technique to convey information and express one’s thoughts on a subject matter towards an audience. David Gruber, a marine biologist, performed an informative, yet engrossing TED talk, on October 2015, concerning the fascinating sea creatures that inhabit the world’s unfathomable sea. His utilization of an implicit thesis and strong supporting arguments, multiple literary devices and methods of developments, and his overall purpose and effectiveness of the oral essay, all helped him successfully portray his thoughts and feelings on this topic. The structure of an essay, and the way that all the information is laid out and linked to one another, comprehensively expresses the main idea of the topic and gets the…

Transitioning to a university such as Wayne State University from Utica High School, I was not aware of the diverse writings that I would cross paths with during my journey of being here. I have only been at Wayne for a semester now, so this would be my first English class in college. When I first began the course, I believed and had high hopes that the class would be very bland; bland in a way that the coursework would be topics I had already learned and wrote about in the past years. However, to my surprise, the class was the complete opposite.…

Once I was finished reading essays from NPR’s series “This I Believe” I found that the essay “Tomorrow will be a better day” by Josh Rittenberg to be extremely entertaining whereas some other essays lacked the ability to keep me interested. It managed to maintain my interest while still showing to be a great essay to read and analyze. The reason that I believe this is due to the fact that it does well when it comes to the point of grabbing attention with word choice, the way Rittenberg keeps readers focused, and his ability to paint a detailed picture for the reader. Rittenberg does extremely well keeping the reader focused and interest by the words he chooses like instead of energy shortage he uses “devastating energy crisis” or instead of…

Graduation I looked up the word rite from page 16, paragraph 1 which means “a religious or other solemn ceremony or act” in this case a graduation. It is hard for me to relate to my highschool class as extended family because my class is 500 students strong, with 2000 kids in total in my school. I don’t even know the names of a good deal of them because I have never even met them. I don’t know who they are or even if they do well or not, so calling them extended family is a foreign concept to me. The idea on page 16 that says “only a small percentage would be continuing on to college” is not something that happens in the area I currently live.…
