People tend to migrate in clusters from communities when ideas change or they do not feel welcomed. While being in communities that share one’s views can actually create or divided in the larger level. They begin to create more extreme forms of their own views. “When people are in homogenous group where they are surrounded by others who corroborate their beliefs, they tend to become more radical in their beliefs” (Motyl, 2016). This shows how individuals create and relate to the communities formed based on ideology and ambient cues. In the reading Motyl breaks these cues with social and environmental cues that influence how individuals identify as themselves as well as a collective. Another factor of the negative consequences of being in communities that have similar views is a sense of naïve realism. This is when people believe that their view objective and others have the same view (Motyl, 2016). In the reading Motyl writes about how individual move because of feelings of nit belonging do to different ideologies. “When people perceive that their ideological values do not fit in their current community, they perceive that they do not belong and are increasingly likely to move to a new, more ideologally fiiting community” (Motyl, 2016). This shows how individuals are impacted by the larger level but also interconnecting how communities and individuals interact with each other. The author does do a great job representing many viewpoints however, by including how organizations within the communities impacts the individual level would have given me a better understanding of how the ideological enclave plays a role in the geological separation of liberals and conservatives. The reading does not include organization like schools have impacted the way the groups are separated.
