For some time there seemed to be little overall variation in the share of people identifying themselves as conservative, moderate, liberal, and other political ideologies, with conservatives either a majority or tied with moderates ( ). However, in 2015, a shift has occurred and the American people are leaning towards the left side of the political spectrum, identify themselves among the main values of liberalism. The actions and thinking of those of this nation in recent years is evidence that these ideas are far more visible in relevance to liberalism than any other political ideology.

Individual liberty can be defined as an individual who exercise freely those rights generally accepted as being outside of governmental control ( ). A similar shift in individual liberty is recognizable in matters regarding sexuality. CBS News/New York Times Poll, conducted a nationwide poll on September 9th to 13th where a sample size of 1,261 adults were asked if they think that same-sex couples’ marriages should be legal or not legal. There was a majority ruling of 55% of adults believing that same-sex marriage should be legal ( ). In July of 2015, Gallup had did a similar poll asking, adults nationwide, "Do you think marriages between same-sex couples should or should not be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages?". Results concluded that 58% of adults do believe that same-sex marriages should be recognized as such. ( ).
