Liberal Views On Abortion

Great Essays
The controversy of abortion has been around for decades and for decades to come. Some suppose that an abortion is never acceptable, while others believe it is always acceptable. The first of the two extreme views, is considered a pro-life or conservative view and the latter is a pro-choice or liberal view. Most conservatives and liberals discuss abortions as if it is a clear black and white issue, but it is clearly a more difficult and gray matter that requires for deeper thought. In other words, one should consider the complexity of abortions because abortions vary from case to case. One must consider both the justifying reason for the abortion and the stage of fetal development. Some abortions are ethically justifiable depending on the stage …show more content…
Killing the embryo or fetus would be equal to murder. Putting religion and politics aside, a major medical concern would exist if all abortions were banned. Whether abortion is legal or illegal, they will be performed and “[t]he prevalence of high mortality rates at illegal “abortion mills” strengthens, rather than weakens, the State’s interest in regulating the conditions under which abortions are performed” (Blackmun 53). On the opposite side, supporters of pro-choice may suppose an abortion is acceptable at any time throughout the pregnancy. If this is true, then the fetus has no moral status. Liberals then claim the fetus “…has no more right to life than a piece of tissue, such as an appendix, and an abortion is no more morally objectionable than an appendectomy” (Mappes, Zembaty, and DeGrazia 3). However, pro-choice advocates cannot compare a fetus to an appendix or any other bodily organ because they fail to acknowledge that the fetus has at least the potential to become human and the organ does not. The potential of the fetus to become human cannot be denied because it in fact “…has the genetic makeup characteristic of human beings” (Lee and George 36). Because the fetus has potential to become …show more content…
It is possible to draw the line of when it is ethically acceptable to abort between the first and second trimester. It is scientifically supported that brain activity happens around the second trimester. This suggests the fetus is capable of feeling pain and pleasure, or sentience. For further support, “… somewhere around the sixteenth to the eighteenth week there usually occurs quickening, the point at which the woman begins to feel the movements of the fetus. And somewhere around the twenty-second week, viability becomes a realistic possibility. Viability is the point at which the fetus is capable of surviving outside the womb” (Mappes, Zembaty, DeGrazia 3). The second trimester is from week thirteen to twenty-seven. The fetus actually starts to move before the woman is capable of feeling it, which puts this before the sixteenth week. Only for a couple circumstances should an abortion be performed after the first trimester. Additionally, the procedures performed after the first trimester are brutal and unjust. The procedure commonly performed during the second trimester is known as dilation and evacuation abortion or D&E abortion. “In D&E… a forceps is used to dismember the

Foremost, Islam places clear criteria to determine the beginning of life. The spirit is blown into the foetus at 120 days of gestation, and so a life begins. Based on this ruling, aborting the foetus after the given time is strictly prohibited in Islam. Second, if keeping the pregnancy will be life-threatening and affect the health of the female parent, Islam allows to abort the foetus, within or after the 120 days of gestation.…

Many argue that an unborn foetus has the same rights as human beings, that being of a legal and religious nature. These are referred to as ‘pro-life’. Others, pro-choice’, polemically dismiss this claim as being nonsensical, arguing, instead, that a foetus cannot be considered a human being since it has neither sentience (consciousness) nor the capacity to reason. Whether this can be held as fact, is entirely in dispute. As Dr. Kaczor (2011) suggests, for those who are pro-life, the term foetus is dehumanising, in itself, and can thus lead to the assumption that the foetus is non-human, whilst those who consider themselves pro-choice might argue that to label the unborn as being a child or a baby would indeed bias their case, since ‘killing a baby’ appears more immoral than to ‘kill a foetus’, or, as they phrase it, ‘terminating a…

Many hold the underlining premise is that many will consider the fetus to be not human, or a person, or has no rights until the fetus is viable if it were to be pulled outside of the womb. And others will say that the fetus has no rights until “said” function of the fetus’s body is operating, i.e. a heartbeat, brain activity, first breath, or pain sensors. Both of these arguments foundations are built upon sand, they can change and shift to suit one’s opinion rather than objectively say what defines the human being and with that definition of human being comes human rights to the…

Thus, I would perform an abortion in some cases, but only at early stages. I have several reasons for that. Thus, the primary aspect in ethics of abortion is the consciousness of fetus. One of the most current pressing and controversial social problem in our country today is the topic of abortion. Politically speaking abortion is partially vaginally delivering a living fetus before killing the fetus and completing the delivery (Trupin 2010). It is one of the most difficult ethical decisions to make because it involves basically judging the line between life and death. Unfortunately, for the last couple years, abortion has been a practice renowned as an essential human right. Many people are avid supporters for abortion.…

A fetus is only considered a fetus once a pregnancy has reached the 3-month mark. In the early stages of pregnancy, the fetus is not, in fact, an infant. “If we consider what it is rather than what it might become, we must acknowledge that the embryo under three months is something far more primitive than a frog or a fish. To compare it to an infant is ludicrous” (Peikof). If a woman decides to have an abortion before the first trimester is over, she is not committing murder as some say, and therefore, is not violating the potential baby’s…

(NCBI). Yes, the fetus has its own constitutional rights, but some abortion laws argue that the fetus has no separate existence from the mother. Therefore, it is the mother’s decision on whether or not to terminate the fetus. Even though the fetus earns its constitutional rights later in the pregnancy, most abortions don’t happen in the second or third trimester of the pregnancy. “Of the 1.6 million abortions performed in the U.S. each year, 91 percent are performed during the first trimester; 9 percent are performed in the second trimester); and only about 100 are performed in the third trimester” (FOX News).…

That's why, the idea that it is right to abort due to a demand, or abortion for one or both parties not to have a hard time, that a woman has a right to do whatever she wishes with her body, is not applicable to the discussion of abortion, since the body of the mother is different from her baby, or rather, fetus. Talking about abortion because of medical reasons, where the life of the mother is in danger, that should be the choice of the mother, family, and doctor. It's true that the mother and the unborn baby are two separated living organisms, but under these difficult scenario, it's definitely a personal decision for those people that are directly involved.…

Nothing can separate a room faster than the topic of abortion. For some, the protection of human life, regardless of form, should be considered as an endeavor of all persons. However, others argue that a person does not actually become a living being worthy of such protection until certain periods of development have passed. The determining factor for when life is established through various stages of development provides another opportunity for lengthy commentary with no conclusive results. These arguments are not only controversial throughout the general population, but also in religious circles as well.…

The committee states that the, “embryo merits respect as a form of human life, but not the same level of respect accorded to an individual,” (Kristol and Cohen). This can be translated to mean that the embryo should be respected in its abilities to develop further, but should not be abused. That respect does not extend to treating it as a living person. The question of ethics on this issue brings up many pro-life supporters, which are against abortion. The idea of abortion is applied in the sense that the embryo is fully a human being and therefore may not be killed.…
