My sister suggested that I should come see him play and climb on the equipment during the lesson. One of the workers came to the front and started the first exercise by singing a song. My nephew clapped, screamed, and danced to show his excitement. As I watched the lesson director sing and encourage the children, I realized how much I enjoyed it and how much I wanted to be in the director's shoes. However, only after interviewing another liberal studies major did I understand that these feelings were not only normal but actually ideal. I am a liberal studies major hoping to get my teaching credential after I graduate. For some reason, I am drawn to being a teacher. A couple years ago I had the pleasure to help walk a former patient across the gym to receive his high school diploma. He received a standing ovation from a crowed gymnasium and I watched tears stream down his mother’s face as she watched her son accept his diploma and shake hands with the superintendent. It’s a memory I treasure to this day. I feel honored I was asked to be a part of this young man’s dream and forever grateful that I could experience the amount of love shown on that gym floor. On days that life becomes too hard or I start to question if this is truly what I am meant to do with my life, I reflect on that day.…

I came to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh because I wanted to obtain a degree in nursing. While sitting through freshman orientation, I learned that my time here would focus not only on preparing me to be a nurse but also on providing me with a liberal arts education. Initially this did not excite me, as I did not see the use in focusing my time here on themes such as sustainability, civic knowledge, and intercultural competence. I had thought to accomplish this, I would need to take unnecessary courses to fill a checkbox. Halfway through my education, I still do not know how to be a nurse, but I do know that my initial feelings about receiving a liberal arts education were wrong.…

My sociological self-discovery in life was working with and helping the general public. I developed an interest in helping people get on the right track by emphasizing the great things in life compared to the negative aspects that we indulge in on a daily basis. Having a better understanding of who we are as human beings, brought me into Sociology.…

I never imagined that going back to school would make me feel so alive. New stories, facts, and references feed my mind and my voice, bringing confidence and clarity to my life. In Spain, where I grew up, women were not recognized or encouraged to continue their education or have a voice. Out of ignorance, my father and brothers crashed any impulse that I had as a young girl to let my opinions and my voice out; however, I found alternative ways to express myself through dance, paint and spiritual practices. Even though I am confident in my body and my artistic expression, I have not explored the capacities of my voice and opinions into a professional life so I am developing them through academic studies.…
