Social workers will be using their education, and training along with being culturally…
An Analysis of Historical Divides: Jane Addams and Mary Richmond As a founder of social work, Jane Addams embraced social and economic rights in addition to social change for everyone (Anders, & da Silveira Nunes Dinis, 2015). Her work through Hull-House revealed her collaboration of culture, social, and political functions (Anders, & da Silveira Nunes Dinis, 2015). As an example, she was an advocate for women issues, believed in the removal of racisms and sexism globally, assisted with the provision of food distribution, jobs, and education through social justice (Anders, & da Silveira Nunes Dinis, 2015). Clearly, we see a demonstration of Addams being consistent with the macro practitioner with community interventions inclusive of management,…
Chapter 7 and 8 in The Practicum Companion gave some very important and insightful points. Chapter 7 was on working in groups while in the field. One of the main points discussed was expectations for practice with groups. They gave four examples of models that social workers may fulfill they were, social action/goals model, reciprocal goals model, and remedial goals model. Another point discussed was learning the factors that come along with group practice.…
I feel like I am professionally ready for my senior year placement. I am looking forward to being able to spend much more time and actually see what a social worker does and interact with a social worker on a much different level than previous service learning’s. I believe that being able to interact with individuals at this last site will help me tremendously when it comes to interacting with clients and employees at my senior placement. This service learning helped me to acquire social skills, which will be extremely helpful when it comes to next year. I would like to build on my learning for the next academic year by understanding and reading more about interviewing, assessment, intervention, and evaluation of practice.…
Two professional skills or behaviors that a competent social worker should have are communication and active listening. Communication in interprofessional practice is very important. Also, you need to effectively communicate your thoughts and…
Educational Policy 2.1.7 states that social workers are able to “Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment” (CSWE 2012, p. 6). Social workers understand and apply various concepts of human behavior and growth through assessment and practice models. There are many diverse populations and social workers must utilize multiple perspectives of family systems, rural and urban environments, community factors, and strategic planning to understand and evaluate the unique and individual effects of various contexts on human behavior. Social workers utilize the person-in-environment concept, and strive to inform individuals, groups, and families of problems associated with social justice issues and social problems on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. Through a developed sense of knowledge of human development on each stage of life, Social workers raise awareness and intervene with at-risk individuals and help them to uncover their inherent strengths, and reduce concerns and…
This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…
To my understandings, generalist social work practice is an academic preoperational tool that introduces students to simplistic social work-related concepts of empowerment and advocacy with and on behalf of the clients served (NASW Code of Ethics p. 5). Additionally, generalist social work practice provides informative structured guidelines with the intention to help social work students obtain the required knowledge and skills needed to work in the human and social services jobs (Shulman P. 89) For example, when establishing a helping relationship, development of trustworthiness and commitment is an important procedure client applies to best determine if the social worker will best meet one’s needs (Harper-Dorton p. 65). This example illustrates…
Social workers use countless theories in their areas of practice. These theories attempt to explain human behavior, relationships and social issues. A theory is a logical system of concepts that helps to explain why something happens in a particular way and to predict outcomes. By grounding their practice in theory, social workers can better understand his or her own task, orient goal setting, and anticipate outcomes. Two theories will be discussed in this paper.…
The most significant obstacle to attracting high value clients is that they ordinarily only work within their own inner circle of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. Although it’s not easy to become a part of the circle they belong to, once inside, you can become known and trusted by them. Before long, business will come…
Providing love, meeting their basic needs, food, shelter, safe environment, and implement a child care plan, promoting health growth. This would also include working with social workers and other professionals involved in their lives. However, the system failed Cupcake and others due to lack of knowledge at this time. Therefore, it’s important for all Social Workers to practice pedagogical. Practicing pedagogical will enable the Social Workers to provide opportunities for learning in the basic subjects.…
These actions may be in the form through practice, community organizing, supervision, consultation administration, advocacy, social and political action, education, and research and evaluation. Social workers pursue to improve the ability of people to address their own needs. Social workers also try to help organizations, communities, and other social institutions to individual’s needs and social…
Ethical Issues When Social Workers Specialize in Addictions Social workers that specialize in addictions can face many ethical issues while trying to help their client achieve sobriety. A social worker needs to focus on human relations, trust building, allowing the client to make independent decisions, and to show an acceptance and respect for the client regardless of the situation. One ethical issue is if a woman is seeking help for substance abuse and she discloses that she is pregnant.…
My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
Throughout this semester we have discussed and practiced various techniques that can be used when working with clients. This semester at Loyola has enhanced my understanding of what it truly means to be a social worker, from the classroom perspective. In my field placement, I do not believe it is directly related to social work, but I was able to use a social worker perspective when interacting with the children in the program. This course was the only course that provided me with hands-on experience of engaging with different types of clients. In my other classes, we did not do case demonstrations instead, we discussed different theories and perspectives about individuals and family systems.…
