Liberal arts studies is a variation of literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences. Thus with gaining a liberal arts education, the students acquire the values, goals, skills, and knowledge setting the building blocks for lifelong learning. With obtaining a liberal arts education the student can understand the complexity of their major. The liberal arts education can help someone be better rounded in the work force by developing useful skills such as communication and problem solving. With obtaining these skills the individual can become more useful not just in the workforce but worldly, because they have a broader knowledge of the things around them. The knowledge that is learned from a liberal arts education aids students on an intellectual and personal development. These developments are a necessity because it is essential in a global economy. There are views that claim liberal arts studies is a last resort for a person who doesn’t know what to do with their life. On the contrary, by studying the liberal arts it creates a diverse background for the individual. With that diverse background there is a better understanding to the situations that the student will face economically and socially. The students benefits economically because people want candidates that were willing to learn across different field of studies. Also employers desire transferable skills, skills that can be taken with them to any job, which is typical from a liberal arts education. Socially, it prepares the individual to adapt and be successful in the changing world.     In his arguments, Ungar points out that while many believe a “liberal-arts degree is a luxury,” it is not (227). It may indeed be true that pursuing such a degree is more expensive and that families are struggling financially, but Ungar argues that it “a better investment” as it teaches the students how to communicate in an effective way and how to be critical thinkers which allows for them to be “innovative and creative” (227-228).
