War is an experience that will last with you throughout your life. You may end up traumatized or completely broken. “The Sniper” takes place in an Irish civil war, where the country had split into two parities, the Free Staters and the Republicans. Everyone was dragged into the war, and families were broken apart as they possibly went to different parties. In “The Sniper,” Liam O’Flaherty suggests the horror of war not only by representing its physical dangers, but also by its psychological effects. In war, there is a constant sense of danger, however, the sniper also had to deal with direct dangers. In the background, to add pressure, are “Machine guns and rifles (that) broke the silence of the night.” (Paragraph 1) Machine guns have also …show more content…
Throughout the story, the sniper goes through a series of mental states. At first, the sniper feels reckless due to drinking alcohol and debated whether to smoke or not. “He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous.” (Paragraph 3) He rashly decided to smoke despite knowing that it would give away his presence to the enemy. He was also well aware that drinking will make him feel reckless, but he does them anyways most like due to the pressure and stress of the war. Later in the story, he falls into remorse/regret. “The lust of battle died in him,” (Paragraph 23) when the mission was over. The recklessness from the alcohol fades and he felt guilt and made an oath to stop. He had gone to despise this war, the enemies, and himself. As the sniper was about to leave the scene, he felt curious of who the enemy sniper was. “He decided that he was a good shot, whoever he was. He wondered did he know him.”(Paragraph 25) The sniper had respect for the enemy sniper and wondered if he knew him since the war had split friend and families apart. The sniper finds out that it was his brother that was killed. While it is not confirmed what had happened, it is assumed that the sniper will develop some sort of trauma or shock from it. As the sniper changes mentality so many times in one battle, An entire war would change his entire

Liam O’Flaherty teaches his readers that thinking before acting can cause regret, and he shows this lesson through Irony and foreshadowing. In the story “The Sniper” the theme that Flaherty uses shows the dangers of not thinking. One act of not thinking by the first sniper was when he decides to have a cigarette. This illustrates a dangerous act because he knows that he was behind enemy…

The theme of the story, "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty is there are no true survivors in war. A person can leave a war realizing they did something they didn't intend to do. An individual may go into war with the idea that they will fight for their country, and not realize that they have become a cold-blooded killer simply because of circumstance, just like what happened to the Republican sniper after he shot the Free Stater, "Then when the smoke cleared, he peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy had been hit," (O'Flaherty 147). When the sniper was happy after he killed the Free Stater, it showed how he was blinded by his commitment to protect his country, and how he forgot he was destroying another human being.…

Sarajevo’s Solitary Sniper I watch the Sarajevo wind leaf through the newspapers that are glued by blood to the street, spilled blood on the street that I have caused. I am a sniper. A sniper sitting lonesome in a collapsing building, waiting patiently to take out those innocent people roaming the rubble below me. Bodies that I and other on my side have killed line the streets, but the amount of death is not what gets to me. I often don’t want to kill the survivors who pass – weak, defenceless, and dying – but my superior sits in a building not too far from where I am… watching.…

This line is similar to when the sniper has not encountered anyone which shows that there was no point of trying to kill the sniper because it did not advance anybody. The man and woman who planned to kill the sniper did not affect the plot, their plan did not solve any of the problems causing the war. Violence is not the solution, it just causes more issues and chaos in the world.…

This story is a perfect example of war turning people into objects, the war turned these two brothers into enemy soldiers even though they grew up together and, presumably, love each other. In a civil war especially, like the one going on in this story, brothers can easy be turned against each other because unlike major country wars where they are fighting for more, or defending what they have, the war is being fought by, and exclusively, their own people, and because of this there have been many families in history, more than one country's history, that have been ripped apart by civil wars. Liam O’Flaherty’s tale of two brothers, “The Sniper,” is a great must read tale for young men and women everywhere. This story is great because not only does it make you appreciate your family, but it also tells a story beneath the surface about two brothers going into a civil war on opposing sides.…

The theme of “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty is that war reduces human beings to mere objects. to further explain it is that they have no names, no faces. That they are just targets and nothing more, to be shot at from a distance. Without knowing who are you shooting and knowing if they’re going yours or if their your friends or family. And there is no no winners, regardless of who you kills more people or takes more land.…

In The Sniper, the theme is about how war tears families apart Although, in contrast, “The Man He Killed” has a theme that war tears friends apart. “His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody.” (O’Flaherty 208). His realization begins to scare him, and how the soldier he killed had a wife and family at home that he needed to provide for. The silence on the front takes away his distractions as he learns how terrible the war is. This realization is similar to what had happened in a movie called “The Wave”, where a teacher conditions his children into being disciplined and doing what he said. Two characters in the movie realize how wrong this is halfway through, how wrong it is to have their thoughts and ideas taken away from them for the better of the group. And that’s exactly what the war did to those fighting it, and even those who did not.…
