During the time of this tale, there is a civil war going on in Dublin Ireland. This is the war that the two brothers are fighting in. This story is a perfect example of war turning people into objects, the war turned these two brothers into enemy soldiers even though they grew up together and, presumably, love each other. In a civil war especially, like the one going on in this story, brothers can easy be turned against each other because unlike major country wars where they are fighting for more, or defending what they have, the war is being fought by, and exclusively, their own people, and because of this there have been many families in history, more than one country's history, that have been ripped apart by civil wars.
Liam O’Flaherty’s tale of two brothers, “The Sniper,” is a great must read tale for young men and women everywhere. This story is great because not only does it make you appreciate your family, but it also tells a story beneath the surface about two brothers going into a civil war on opposing sides. This brother civil war situation, like the one in The Sniper, has happened before in the history of civil wars but this topic has not been written about as much as it should
