Tori- “So I wanted to talk to you today about something called Li-Fraumeni Syndrome and I know many people probably don't know what this is.”
Ella- “ Well I actually did not know what it was either until I had it myself. It is a rare syndrome that can lead to the development of many cancers such as leukemia, brain cancers, breast cancer, adrenal cortex cancer, and many others.”
Tori- “ Was there a cancer that you developed from having the syndrome?”
Ella- “ Yes, actually I developed bone cancer in my childhood, which is the common time to develop cancer from this syndrome. I actually also have to be careful because I may develop more than 1 cancer in my lifetime from it(Family).” …show more content…
Tori- “ So your saying that compared to another person with cancer, your syndrome adds more difficulty to your treatment plans?”
Ella- “ Yes, exactly and my syndrome also causes a mutation in the p53 gene, which is a tumor suppressor gene(Family). This is why cancer can develop because the gene is suppose to stop abnormal cells from growing, but the mutation prevents this(Family). Li-Fraumeni syndrome can also be a mutation in the CHEK2 gene, but the p53 gene may play a role in the development of up to 50 % of all cancers(Cooper).”
Tori- “ Does knowing all of this ever scare you or make you nervous about possibly passing on your hereditary cancer syndrome?”
Ella- “In all honesty, there have been times that it has scared me and I know that i would never want anyone i cared about to go through the same thing, but in the end being prepared is the best thing.
