LGBTQ+ - Teacher Awareness

I believe that there is a lack of knowledge within teachers about their students issues. If anything, students should feel the most comfortable going to their teachers with their issues. My motivation on selecting this issue began with the fact that I have witnessed what it was like to have your only counselor away and see a bunch of students struggle to deal with their problems alone. I go to a small school with a lot of openly LGBT people and to see the struggles some of them had to go through was awful. Teachers should have the knowledge necessary to help their students. We wanted to start this process at New Technology High School, which we did, but it didn’t completely work out as planned. To begin we made a survey asking various questions that were both directed to the LGBT community and straight people. We then shared it with the whole school and we were able to get ninety-seven responses, one response being from a teacher. What we found interesting is that the teacher said that they believe that teachers should have training in this subject. That was a push for us because we realized that not just students believe their should be a mandatory training, but also a teacher. Next, we tried to give the data to the principle for feedback and in return offer a short seminar on LGBT issues. He said he would get back to it later, but never did which set us back a bit. We were at loss for a new idea that would be able to be viewed by many teachers. We wanted something that was easy to access if we weren’t available and something that can also help students who are in need of help or reassurance. In the 21st century, just about all the information we get is from the internet. We want to spread proper information and statistics to anyone who needs it. I do believe that if we do get the opportunity to present to the teachers at New Tech, it would help a lot with refining the information we have now. They have had the opportunity to interact with many students in their careers so they know a lot of the issues. The problem within that is they see the issues they just don’t know how to handle them.
I learned a lot from this project. I learned a lot about LGBT youth and I learned about the lack of knowledge some teachers have around an enormous topic. I learned that a lot of the LGBT issues start with education or the lack of. To reduce suicide rates in LGBT youth and lower the percentage of people who oppose same sex marriage for various reasons, there needs to be accurate information spread. Children tend to look up to their parents and their teachers, so to have resources available within a school to help these people would push the LGBT community far beyond what it is right
