During the fall semester, I was involved in an unfortunate situation where my chapter made national media headlines. The incident involved a new member in my chapter and a member of the LGBTQ community. The new member had made some terrible decisions and harassed this person with no sense of humility. Being president of the chapter that had this new member, I was deeply saddened and reached out to the victim as soon as I could. I attempted to heal the situation the best I could while taking immediate action against the new member. After I had suspended him indefinitely, I called an emergency chapter meeting two days later and the new member was let go. For me, it was very hard to be the one to have that conversation with the new member and

Not only did his poor decisions completely dismantle his own life, but the other individuals involved sought counseling and additional help to cope with their grief from the event. Therefore, this one incident alone solidifies the need for change at school and other universities. Across America, millions of people have tried to end sexual and physical assault and we need to strive to bring change and build a grassroot movement to help address this issue. The grassroot movement can help end the horrors of assault with the power of social change and people coming together. Ella Baker believed that people learn from their mistakes and become stronger people as life continues.…

In 1985, a passionate group of individuals grew weary of the social system that oppressed them and founded the Austin Latina/Latino Lesbian and Gay Organization, ALLGO. This team realized that intersectionalism instigated their disadvantages in life and corrupted the very movements that were supposed to be supporting them. They saw “on one side, mainstream gay activists whose agendas ignored farm workers, police brutality, and racism; and on the other side, mainstream Latino activists whose agendas excluded homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny,” (allgo). The prolonged exclusion of and discrimination against those who were both queer and Latino is the social injustice that gave ALLGO a solid foundation.…

We come to this world as innocent infants, who know nothing of discrimination and differences. We learn to dislike and differentiate as we grow older, this is due to our social, cultural and religious backgrounds. We are all unconsciously attached to our believes and our knowledge of how the world works that most of us have the feeling of unease with the notion of change. Today, changing a few ideologies of the past is becoming more flexible. One of the most controversial topics is sexual orientation.…

Prejudices attitudes are growing on college campuses and Dartmouth College is a perfect example of the growth. In an article title, “Dartmouth Apologizes for Indian Incidents”, we learned that “A fraternity sold T-shirts, prior to the football game against the College of the Holy Cross, depicting a Holy Cross Crusader performing oral sex on an Indian. ”(Jaschik, 2006). This incident among others against the Native Americans led to the President of the college, James Wright releasing an apology.…

Prior to studying and having a better understanding of culture, I had a bleak view of one of the communities in which I am a part of, which is the African American community. My views stemmed from my parents, other relatives, and peers, all of whom are a part of the same racial group. Since a majority of our time were spent with those from within the African American community, we would have a wide range of positive and negative experiences. However, the negative experiences were the primary focus and were used to generalize our group. This misguided focus would aid in a conclusion that African Americans as a whole were solely to blame for being lower on a hierarchical basis compared to other racial groups.…

All the shots mentioned in the chapter about the title sequence are from San Francisco. The city is known to have a high population of gay people and there are many pride flags all over the city and especially the Castro district showing the pride of the LGBT community. This is why it is no surprise that Nomi Marks lives in that city with her girlfriend. Her girlfriend Amanita Caplan wears her hair in dreads of which some parts are coloured pink, lavender and blue which are the colours of the bisexual pride flag.…

The LGBT(lesbian gay bisexual and transgender) community has always faced oppression,Although same sex marriage is legal now in all states it was a very difficult process it took are country many years to pass a law where a male and a male can be married or a female and a female. Most LGBT people have experienced anything from mean comments to crazy stares and have to face being unaccepted from some of the closest people to them. Throughout the history of activism within the LGBT+ community, there has been a common goal to promote openness and acceptance. By employing a strategy modeled after the civil rights movement, which mainly focused on assimilation into the dominant institutions as a means of acceptance, activist groups have received their fair share of criticism. In 1997, Cathy J Cohen, a Black lesbian author and social activist, published the groundbreaking article “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” a year after a controversy she introduces in the beginning of the essay. The famed Gay Men’s Health Crisis, best known for their active role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS during the AIDS crisis, came under fire after…

What I understand to be the issues faced by LGBTIQ people are; the fact they may not be accepted into society because of who they are, the bullying they have to go through from society because no one wants to accept who they really are, even the fact that some LGBTIQ would rather stay home then walk the streets and get looks of disgust because of who they are. These people should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin and in society, they should not be bullied for who they are and should be accepted by everyone as they have a big part in society and without them we might all be the same. I believe the Queensland ambulance service choose to be a part of wear it purple day and the pride parade because they wanted to show their support towards diversity, make a stand for bullying and harassment and make sure that the world knows that no matter who you are you should feel safe and secure in this world.…

Throughout LGBTQ activism and political pursuits, the queer community has fostered distinct approaches to organization, evident in its political organization around identities and its political organization around issues. While both of these approaches possess individual strengths, they have also been a topic of contention within the community, as opinions vary in regard to whether the use of coalitional or identity politics is most effective in the pursuit of equal rights. In this paper, I will first clarify the most evident arguments in support of organization through both the politics of coalition and the politics of identity. Following, I will offer reasoning as to why the queer community should pursue the advancement of rights through…

When I first realized I was gay, it did not seem like a big difference. Some exciting stuff happened, like gay marriage becoming legal and meeting a group of friends who were also part of the lgbtq community. As time went on I trended towards music, art, literature, almost anything as long as I felt accepted or represented. I became more political as it became clear that more people than I could have imagined would like to take away my basic rights or the rights of those in my community. I could not understand how others were not keeping up in the realm of politics, why they were not as loud as me when it came to the same issues.…

While the laws continue to be disrupting the community and rights of women, the community continues to act out by having peaceful protests and marches throughout the world. A peaceful resistance does not negatively impact the society when certain members of that society are enacting in the resistance; but the others that do not participate are, in fact, deeply offended by it. Although in my opinion, it sheds a positive light on what the people have to say. Considering the new law about transgenders using the bathroom for whichever gender they were born as bathroom causes an uproar in the lives of Texans now; this law is not only disrespectful to the transgender community, but it can also cause havoc in a place where there should be safety and privacy.…
