LGBT CIVIL RIGHTS In the recent years things have became widely accepted across this country and being homosexual is one of them. Now in the past it was looked down upon always and is still looked down by some people today. Though this has changed vastly with more people accepting people as who they are then just based of their sexuality.…
In Understanding Film Theory, queer theory is defined as: ”An approach to social and cultural study which seeks to challenge or deconstruct traditional ideas of sexuality and gender, esp. the acceptance of heterosexuality as normative and the perception of a rigid dichotomy of male and female traits. ”1…
Today, at an archaeological site on the West side of the ancient town of Mt. Pleasant, in a living complex known as Tallgrass, we have made an interesting and rare discovery. We have found an artifact only seen a few times. This artifact is mostly black, with some raised buttons of varying color, including grey, green, red, and yellow. There is an emblem that appears to be painted onto the front of a flaming circle, with two lines separating the circle into four pieces. The object seems to have handles on the left and ride sides, with the rest of the body arching between the handles in an upward fashion.…
I found this interesting being that since the museum is called the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, there would be an equal representation of both the gay and the lesbian perspective. Additionally, I learned that there truly is a divide in the different groups of sexualities. When the curator read the letter that one of the donors sent expressing his disappointment in the expansion of lesbian art, I was both confused and irritated at his reasoning. It is mind boggling to think that individuals believe that gay representation is any more important than lesbian representation. One would think that the gay community should help empower the lesbian movement, considering both groups are fighting for same sex…
I do see my artifact a bit different because I have done more research into my chosen artifact. the artifact I chose is part of the life's work of Raphael Albert. He was born on the Caribbean island of Grenada and developed a great appreciation for black beauty so much so after going to college for photography, instead of working for London Transport he ends up organizing a number of these "Black Beauty contest". "Albert became an icon in the world of pageantry for his images" (Bichard 2016) the photos he created to connect images that inspire self-confidence within black communities all over the globe. This I believe was his reasons for creating this artifact.…
In previous years, there was little acceptance or understanding of the LGBT community and some of the things they accept, do, believe, and say. One of these things being males putting on makeup. This is seen as a female act in a lot of places, generations, etc. Should we seriously only categorize this cosmetic relief to the female population?…
The issue over removing Confederate statues has sparked many debates and emotions throughout the U.S. Hate speech stirs emotions, so do these statues. This made me think of the debate over if hate speech is protected by the freedom of speech. Hate speech is a terrible thing. But, it needs to be protected.…
To show a balance of national and non-nationalist loyalties I added a rainbow peace sign to show Canada’s support of the LGBTQ community. The feather…
This artifact shows my personal responsibility to my Girls Cross Country team in 2014. This was one of the biggest steps I took within my four years of high school. Joining the Cross Country team came with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears; but I must say this sport not only showed me how to push myself physically and mentally but it also showed me what it means to have a team; a…
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms forms the first part of the Constitution Act, 1982. The Charter guarantees civil rights to everyone in Canada and was designed to unify Canadians. The Charter was signed into law by Queen Elizabeth II of Canada on April 17, 1982 along with the rest of the Act. “However, the Bill of Rights is only a federal statute, rather than a constitutional document.” (Wikipedia 04/06/15)…

Heather Malosky The cultural artifact that I chose was my lacrosse stick. It represents how lacrosse has been a continuous occupation throughout my life. The LGBT(lesbian gay bisexual and transgender) community has always faced oppression,Although same sex marriage is legal now in all states it was a very difficult process it took are country many years to pass a law where a male and a male can be married or a female and a female. Most LGBT people have experienced anything from mean comments to crazy stares and have to face being unaccepted from some of the closest people to them. Many LGBT people still get oppressed to this day,the problem isn't the fact that they love someone of the opposite sex the problem is their surroundings. Often people of religion are not accepting to the LGBTQ community the are driven to believe that being “Gay” is a sin and anyone who “chooses” to be gay should pray…
Preserving Monuments of our Nation Currently historical monuments are under controversial conflict. Across Canada, there is dispute about renaming, removing, or preserving the monuments. Historical monuments should be preserved, they are expensive to remove and replace, these monuments celebrate and remember important historical figures, and inspire us everyday. Historical figures display an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about our history.…
At the time of Tom Boellstorff’s (2007) article ‘Queer Studies in the House of Anthropology,’ little anthropological research had been undertaken in the realm of non-normative sexualities and genders in non-western contexts. Along with this, there was a lack of scholarship on female non-normative sexualities in both western and non-western contexts. Boellstorff (2007:21) argued that this gap in anthropological research was due to a range of factors; particularly the continued barriers women face cross culturally in accessing both public and private space away from males. In this essay I will argue that anthropologists have since attempted to fill this gap. With ethnographic monographs on non-normative sexualities in non-western contexts arising,…
