Some said it was all a phase, due to me being so young. I was apparently looking for attention. They made me feel like my identity was a disease I could get rid of if I wished hard enough. I’ve been told that I, “don’t look LGBT.” I’ve been told I’m being pretentious, or that because I’m interracial I can’t be pansexual. “You’re too academic to be in the LGBT community,” was the most ridiculous of them all. Being bombarded with “you can’t be” and “I can’t see how you could possibly be” got redundant. However, despite the many rude comments about my orientation, I remained proud. Eventually, I disregarded what they said. I met more people and found the LGBT community to be a second home. The foundation of the group is that everyone is equal, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender. There are no standards to meet; stereotypes are destroyed. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, what your ethnicity is, or who your friends are. The LGBT community is composed of absolutely amazing people who are accepted for who they are. There are open arms and pride flags waving high. There is no hate. Being a part of the community has taught me to own up to who I am and to be
