LGBT Discrimination Essay

Over the last two decades, there has been an increase in the visibility and positive attitude towards the LGBT community. However, the world is full of bias and prejudice that inflict negativity into the lives of people trying to live peacefully. LGBT discrimination is a huge problem in our society; however, some do not recognize it as a problem. It is understandable how some individuals may think that, because the United States has progressed so much when it comes to the LGBT community. The opposition would more than likely state, how can one claim discrimination when the legalization of gay marriage has happened in all fifty states? However, this ‘progress’ was discrimination in itself. Why are members of the LGBT community fighting for rights that they already had but when it was discovered they were homosexual or transgender these rights are taken away based on some perceived bias that America was, unfortunately, built upon? If a gay man was holding the hand of another man in public he would get stared at, pointed at, knowingly and unknowingly talked about, and if someone were brave enough, harassed. I do not understand why everyone needs to know what a person was born as and what they identify as in order for them to go to empty their bladder or bowel. According to CNN, a transgender high school student was made to go use the restroom in the nurse’s office when it was discovered he was transgender. Beforehand, the school had allowed him to use the boy’s restroom, until members of the community expressed concern. Since a miniscule number of students identified as transgender, the school board that is was necessary to protect the rights of other students privacy. This young man was made to use individual stall that was built for him, purposely singling him out from the rest of student body. Later, his lawyer filed lawsuit on the basis of Title IX, a law that prohibits sex discrimination in schools. This young man said that he was willing to fight through this discrimination so another transgender student would not have to. This is just one example of minor discrimination compared to other
