Lexile Reflection

As you can see in both of the video clips I have students sitting in small groups with there peers who have similar Lexile and readiness levels. I have students working in partners and/or groups pretty much every day in this class, so this seating arrangement makes the transition into group work easier, and makes differentiating much easier also. I call all of the students by names their first names, or either mam or sir whenever I am speaking to them. I do not require students respond to my questions by saying yes sir, as long as their responses are not disrespectful, but I have noticed that once students notice I refer to them in this way they start to refer to me as sir without me even directing or asking them too. Examples activity, notice how try to be as loud and enthusiastic as possible to try to transmit to the students that the material and activities being covered is important and meaningful. Near the end of video clip 1 at 7 minutes and 20 seconds I announce to the class they have thirty more seconds, but immediately after doing so I notice a student has been raising there hand waiting patiently for me to come answer there question for some time without me noticing them. I immediately go over to help the student, and spend far more time than the thirty seconds I had just given the class to be able to make sure this students question was completely answered in a way he understood before announcing to the class they had 20 more seconds to finish. Video Clip 2 begins with a student stating they do not know what to do for their writing activity they are completing, and I know from previous experience this student will often tell the teacher he does not know what to do or not understand something in an attempt to get the teacher to give the student the answer. I did not get frustrated or reprimand this student instead I quickly broke down the sequential steps of what to do, and explained each step thoroughly making sure this student knows exactly what to do without revealing to much about specifics of the

During my lesson, I communicated verbally in a slow, clear, and loud manner, in order for all students to best understand me. I also had students repeat our targeted vocabulary words and student-friendly definitions aloud, in order for students, especially English Language Learners, to continue developing language skills and to maximize language development. Throughout my lesson, I made sure to monitor students’ facial expressions in order to determine if any student was confused. When teaching new content, I make sure to repeat myself and to ask students if clarification is needed. I also make sure that I have visuals to match the selected terms or topic in order to provide students with a more thorough understanding and to support my explanations.…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

Shy students: Some children may suffer with confidence issues which may affect their individual work and contribution to the class as they are worried they may get answers wrong and getting told off. To combat this you must build a good rapport and relationship with your students and let them know its ok to be wrong. In my setting we had posters around the classroom made by the children with classroom rules and behaviours, one of them being: ‘Its safe to make mistakes’. Build up trust with particularly shy students and encourage them to come out of their shell and give praise when they try.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

I am looking forward to having an opportunity to gain practical and interactive experience with ASL, Deaf Culture, and being able to implement what I have learned in class. I want to take advantage of instances where I can strengthen my ASL skills, increase my overall confidence, and take advantage of feedback from individuals outside our regular classroom setting. I feel this placement will also help me become more aware of areas where I need to improve in regards to my ASL, and interactions with individuals in the community. Also, I am excited to be in an environment where I can actively measure my personal development with the assistance of staff who are experienced in Deaf Culture, bicultural interaction, and ASL.…

The ten given tips mentioned in the video all seemed to be very effective ones to implement in the classroom if done correctly. Classroom management is crucial, and can definitely make a difference in-between a well ran room and a chaotic classroom. The first tip mentioned was beginning the year tough. I definitely believe teachers have to set the stage of what is expected and stand their ground to instill the procedures and expectations into the students, but this should also not be taken to extreme measures where students are uncomfortable or scared to be in the class. Also, it’s easier for the teacher to set certain procedures such as bathroom signals, attention grabbers, or classroom rules at the beginning of the year so the students know…

I used my place of work, which is currently at Virginia Mitre 10, for my language study. The current work place environment involves in assisting customers with their product choice within the store and serving customers at the checkout. My aim in this language study is to compare how my language changes with each different person I interact with within the work place environment and to extend my knowledge regarding language and communication in the industry. Every shift I work, I would have many interactions with customers coming from different cultures and suburbs. This report will focus on specific interactions on certain customers to compare how my language changes and also with the owner, store manager and other workers in the work place.…

During the purpose and expectation part of the lesson, I taught my students the attention getter that we were going to use. I would say, “Macaroni and cheese,” and the students would respond by saying, “Everybody freeze.” My mentor teacher loved this and it proved to be very helpful because after the students would say their line, they would instantly get quiet and listen for instructions. I felt as though this attention getter was a great way to control the noise level in the classroom as well as quiet students so that I could give further instructions. I also feel as though walking around the classroom whenever possible was a great way for me to not only help students who may be struggling, but to also manage behavior.…

This was not a huge topic in classes as it was deemed common sense and that it was, I feel as if just by assuming the teaching role it gave you the power to manage a class. I learned plenty of management techniques from my associate and different techniques were effective for different classes. In one class there was music playing almost all the time and simply by pausing the music it got all the student’s attention and allowed you to give instructions. Another class responded well to a whistle to get their attention to stop the activity. Additionally a great way to speed the class up to get back on task was to say something like “last one to sit in the circle has to do (random exercise)”, it was amazing to see how quick that made some students move.…

Learned helplessness is the behavior that an individual displays when they feel a sense of discouragement, which causes them to withdraw themselves from situations. They disengage due to the belief that they have no control over the outcome due to multiple failed attempts. This behavior is learned after repeated negative results of their actions and enables the individual to feel that no matter what they do, the conclusion will still be the same. Children can experience learned helplessness in a variety of ways, as their mind is very fragile while it begins to develop, grow and change. As children, we learn how to eat, walk, and talk.…

Also taking away their free time because they were very talkative a day in class. Students will learn by example and this will modify their behavior. Positive and negative consequences will vary behavior but creating an intervention plan with bad students will help them understand and slowly monitor progress. During my field experience I have noticed that my cooperative teacher has taken away fun activities/ labs in class because of the way that students were behaving and this has shown a positive impact on their behavior in future classes because the teacher follows thru with what she says she will do if they do not behave. The ultimate goal of my classroom management is not to manage control of the class but to ensure that everyone meets my expectations in order for them to learn in an effective and supportive environment but to teach students self-discipline and to understand the rules and consequences of my classroom by acting accordingly.…

It was something I did not plan for. For instance in the listening micro lesson, some of them asked questions or asked me to rewind the audio file while they were supposed to be listening to it and do not disturb their colleagues. I have learned that I have to put some rules from the beginning of the session. For instance, I should tell students to write down their questions and wait till the end of the audio file. Besides, these like-real situations helped me to be more comfortable standing up in front of…
