The Weaknesses Of My Writing

Decent Essays
“This year in English Comp 1, we will be writing three big papers. The last paper will end up being 2000 words,” says Ms. Garth on the first day of school. Being only a Junior in High School, I wanted to drop out then. The only thing going through my mind was, “Is this woman crazy?” At the time, I did not believe I would be able to write a paper with 300 words nevertheless 2000. I had never written a paper before. Even Though I was stressed out 95% of the time, I learned that just as I had strengths in writing, I also had weaknesses. My strengths were knowing my audience, getting my assignments done when needed, and telling both sides of the story while my weaknesses were topic sentences, getting my paper started, and transitions throughout …show more content…
During Comp one, one of our big papers was an argumentative research paper. I had never written a research paper before, much less a argumentative paper before. Throughout the writing of this paper, I knew that to give my point of view, I also had to give the other side of the story. In this paper, I wrote about being against abortion. Giving the other side of the story was hard for me because I did not believe in abortion. Even Though it was hard, I turned out being pretty good at giving both sides. I also learned that my favorite type of writing is argumentative because I love giving my input, I love telling my side of the story. I could relate to this type of writing because I love arguing with my friends and classmates because I want to have my say in the situation. I want to give my advice to the …show more content…
When reading or hearing the prompt I have to write about, I can never think of an outline, or an introduction to start my paper with. Once I finally can think of a topic to start writing about, I can go. For example, our second big paper was a research paper, and we had to write about a recent major disaster. I had no idea; nothing came to my mind on what to write about. It took me a total of two days to finally decide on a topic. I wrote about the effects of 9/11. After finally finding a topic to write about, I realized that writing this paper was not going to be as easy as I thought. There was a lot of research I had to look up and while reading the research, I discovered a lot of things my Uncle went through being in the army. I discovered things he would never talk about with his family. I believe he was trying to protect us from realizing what this world has come

Most people write a free write to start off their paper; just to get their mind going but that doesn 't work for me. I have to visualize things to get my mind going, this method works more than people think it does. I like to draw a Chart, Outline, or even a diagram about my topic for me to write anything first. I just can 't start writing, its more of mental issue. I like to have things in order for me to start.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

    Rhetoric Argument

I first want to address the stress of my first attempt at writing for an audience who specializes in the art of writing and argumentation. With that being said, the three readings I am focusing on this week (McNabb, Brooke, and Fleming) did precise job of explaining what exactly the art of rhetoric entails and the nature of Rhetoric and Composition as a field of study. I was fascinated with Fleming’s explanation of argument and the origins and models for arguing. I am of the general public who think that one “has” an argument rather than one “makes” an argument. In this way, I have always placed a negative connotation on arguing, but to think of the journal articles I will eventually write as a form of argumentation, or as an attempt to move…

I believe that I have the potential to be a good writer, as I wrote a seven-page research paper on the way children are becoming more intelligent with the use of the internet, as they have the ability to look up an answer to a question they do not know anytime of the day. I had an easy time writing the paper because we went over everything that needed to be in it beginning with an attention grabbing thesis and ending with a powerful conclusion. I flew through writing the paper, which made me confident that I was going to get a good grade (and I did), it made me feel that I had improved my writing abilities. I also had to write an analytical paper comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to a modern day problem in society. It was more difficult to write compared to the research paper because I had to compare it to a difficult read.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

I have learned how to use neutral language, write complete thesis statements, how to put my own tone and voice in my writing, and how to critique my own paper. How to use neutral language was the most difficult skill to learn over the semester. “Standardized tests can be viewed by teachers, students, and parents, as helpful for the school system or detrimental to one’s academic future”. This opening sentence from my Informational Argumentative Essay is a perfect illustration of how my neutral language showed both sides of the argument but did not actually take a side. “Spiro Theodore Agnew used logos, pathos, and ethos to successfully get his point across to the millions of Americans listening to him that the news is giving out twisted information”.…

I learned to research for evidence, and from that evidence I formed a stance, and later, an argument. After writing the “Synthesis Essay,” we began to write our “Academic Argument,” papers. The evidence and research from the previous essay helped us form academic arguments. This experience helped me form a solid argument that was supported by academic research from scholarly articles, blogs, and news blogs I read. I formed a paper that was well supported with…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
