Oberman takes an unusual and unconventional approach in the structure of Luther: Man Between God and the Devil. Unlike most biographies, the book does not follow a clear chronological order of Luther’s life from birth to death. For example, the Prologue begins with Luther on his deathbed, uttering his final words. Often, Oberman’s formatting and order of events may seem random; however, this keeps the reader engaged in the book. Instead of a chronological approach to Luther’s life, Oberman decided to divide his book down into three different section, with a total of eleven chapters.…

In polygamous culture, men typically have several wives and dozens of children, which makes for an extensive family tree. With several wives with differing personalities, there is bound to be problems and disagreements. According to The Meditteranean College of Social Sciences (2014), “the rivalry between the co- wives more often than not prove damaging to the children in polygamous families due to the pitting against each other and forcing to choose sides” (Thobejane, 2014, p.1059). While severe arguments do not occur in every polygamous family, or any family for that matter, they do happen. Polygamous children grow up with the value that they need to pick a side in order to be acceptable to society, which is not the truth.…
In both The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis writes about how humans separate themselves from God through self-deception; people convince themselves of their virtue while disguising evil goodness. Lewis views this separation from God as tragic and wants his readers to understand that only God leads to happiness (Hill, 202). Lewis first shows the consequences of self-deception through characters who see themselves as superior to others. In The Great Divorce, Lewis introduces one of these characters, the big ghost, who claims to deserve heaven more than Len, the murderer the ghost knew on Earth. The ghost refuses to enter a heaven that puts Len above him.…
I know I am no expert after reading this book, but I have already picked up on little things my friends and family could improve on in their own relationships. For an example, my brother and his girlfriend, Bobbi. They have been off and on for about six years now and can never seem to figure out what keeps happening to make their relationship fail. I had a conversation with Bobbi this weekend about their relationship and I discovered they are the king and queen of the four horseman. Whenever they argue it is always criticizing the other.…

The American Civil War was very misunderstood in that no one really knows the exact reason of why the war started. In Apostles of Disunion, Dew discusses topics such as slavery, racism, economics and state rights to push his point of view on the audience of why the war and secession began. Charles B. Dew wrote this book to inform the audience the secession came from not just the factor of state rights during the time between 1860 and 1861. Because Dew was a Southerner himself, he writes the book off of self-knowledge, experience others, and facts including people and their perspectives on the cause. The most common claim when it came to The Civil War’s cause is it beginning due to slavery and racism in the south; however Dew argues that the…

Hooks brings her view on the role of feminism and marriage into light as she walks us through the early feminist movement and the impact it had on marriages and partnerships. Steinbeck's uses of Biblical allusions portrays the dangers of the sins and hopelessness in the lives of men, and it's consequences that can't be undone. Steinbeck's many biblical references in Of Mice and Men each conveyed their own significant meaning, teaching a specific lesson. For example, the parallel relationship between George and Lennie with Cain and Abel would portray the futility of brotherhood in our lives. (Genesis 4:8-12 NIV) As Cain killed Abel, George murdered his own "brother" too.…
