Importance Of Color Guard

Color guard is a part of the marching band and it is just as much a sport as football. Drum and bugle corps evolved over the years. In 1956 the VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) Post 342 corps became a competitive drum corps called the Phantom Regiment, with an all-girl color guard called the Phantomettes. By 1970 the group included a 24-person color guard and 10 rifles (made of wood). The Phantom Regiment continues to compete and place well in competitions, including the annual Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships (Usilton). As more variations in guard were introduced, color guards looked for ways to outdo each other, leading to competitions. Increasing competitions led to the 1971 creation of Drum Corps International to establish …show more content…
Ms. Maughon said in an interview, “Doing color guard helped me to gain time management and organizational skills. As well as inspired me to get better grades so that I could stay in the program”. By engaging in extracurricular activities, students may be required to maintain good grades in order to meet eligibility to participate in such activities (Francisco). Examples such as competing in a speech contest may help a student gain confidence, and being involved in a youth group or scouting organization may help the student develop character and connect with the community. Community service or volunteering might help a student project a caring and compassion attitude toward others (Francisco).
Color guard has more positive impact in people’s lives who that are in the sport rather than other people who don’t participate in extracurricular activities during high school. It can teach any person confidence to build a strong work ethic. The sport itself ends up being a support when students need an outlet from their everyday lives (Sport of the Arts). It teaches life lessons that parents just can’t teach
