In the introduction to his book, Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, the Pulitzer prize-winning author Edward Humes lays out our trash and asks us to sort through it, examining how we came to be so wasteful. In his introduction, Humes argues that trash is a huge problem in the U.S and that we Americans are obsessed with it. Humes also argues that not only does trash numb us to the effects it cause, but also shows that we cannot control our obsession with consuming and always have to buy the next best thing. Through use of descriptive words, showing of authority on the subject through ethos, and brilliant pathos in his argument, Humes correctly implies that trash is a big problem that can be solved and we can do something about…

Reading the title, Insert Flap “A” and Throw Away, of Perelman’s essay, I was immediately reminded of a tiny telescope model my younger brother purchased. which I was instructed to help him construct, along with the frustration and anger it brought me. The fate of the telescope model was as described in Perelman’s title, the trash. Through the title, the author creates a connection between the reader and himself, emphasizing that he is only human, therefore he can only follow such meaningless directions so closely. Eager to learn the outcome of this similar situation that he was put through, I was prompted to read his essay.…

The story “Mess” by John Hollander is interesting take on the concept on cleanliness and how the human mind perceives it. Hollander starts out his essay by giving an example of how different people react to a mess. He refers to the subjects as X and Y. He states that what may seem messy to X, could be perfectly neat and orderly to Y. Hollander even goes as far to say that if Y had a pile a books, and X arranged all the books into a neat stack, the neat stack could appear to be utter chaos to Y. After this profound example, the article continues to go on and list all the different kind of messes that exist in our lives. Hollander breaks the messes into different categories such as outdoor messes, indoor messes, personal states, and personal appearance messes.…

Through storytelling, he identifies, promotes, and reinforces his shared values; freedom and respect. Personal values come from the heart and with conviction, he inspires to pursue your vision, purpose and behave ethically with respect to people; this is how he believes people should behave. Endeavoring to transcend his values, I believe, he hopes the workers of the organization will support his vision and character. As we know, leaders can encourage or discourage followers to behave a certain way. In comparison to what it out there for us currently PathScan has a competitive advantage. With many of the commercial products that are available they either look for exact signatures to flag unauthorized activity or only monitor data that is occurring at the perimeter. PathScan used statistical methods to detect both known and zero-day behavior and also examines data internally to find the attacker once they have gained access inside the network. PathScan “has scaled to very large networks, has scaled up to millions of computers, and has been validated on large operational networks” unlike many academic approaches available (Maughan & Pozmantier, ).
