There are many points that resonated with me throughout our reading and discussions of Letters to a Young Teacher by Jonathan Kozol. The first point that resonated with me was in Chapter 1. Kozol write “Entrap them first in fascination. Entrap them in a sense of merriment and hopeful expectations. Entrap them in “Bird Gardens.” This quote left a lasting impression on what it takes to be a teacher, in my eyes. It allows you to think about the kind of teacher you can become. When thinking about “Bird Gardens,” Kozol makes you think about discovery, creativity and curiosity. Entrap your students in their imagination and exploration. Make it fun and motivational. When I think about what a Bird Garden is and looks like, I think of a place full of life, wonder, bright colors, and fascination. Bird Gardens are unique, just like our students are unique learners. As a teacher, you need to connect with your students and entrap them in …show more content…
Though we have some teachers who may be less than sources of encouragement, some older teachers can be a great resource. I think it is important to ask for and take advice from other teachers, new and old. All teacher have different experiences and advice to give. Jonathan Kozol writes, “Entrap them in Bird Gardens,”, referencing the painting that he showed to his students, which was an, “instant favorite,” of theirs. Kozol believes that every teacher should go beyond the perceived limits of their students ' intelligence in order for them to become more worldly. I believe that this relates to establishing a chemistry with students because, in order to establish an effective chemistry with students, a teacher must build a sense of, “trust and good-natured camaraderie,” which occurs when a teacher relates to their students on an equal level, as Kozol did with Bird Gardens. When a teacher respects their students’ intelligence, chemistry is able to be made because the students do not feel inferior to the…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

Most of the sentences in the excerpt are a trading of questions in which Miss Ponniah asks a total of three questions in her thought.…
