Letters From The Trenches Report

Brother,
I would tell you that I am getting along fine, but that would be lying. America is involved in a great war overseas, and I, my brother, was drafted to fight. If you have not heard, the sinking of the Lusitania was enough to put President Wilson over the edge, thus entering the war. I cannot tell you enough how mortified I was when I received that letter from the draft service. Please take care of mother,she cried every day until I left and I’m not sure how she is going to make it. They really do mean it when they say war is a living hell. Trenches must be where the devil lives because I am fairly certain there is no place worse. It is lined with barbed wire, promising to rip your body to shards if not careful. Mud has become a second layer of my skin, a part me as is death. Lice now call me home, feasting on my decaying body. I am considered to be one of the lucky ones, many of the men have suffered from trench foot. This is an infection that takes over the foot and eats away at the skin. They call the land between trenches No Man's Land, for no man dares to cross it. We silently wait in the trenches listening for signs of the enemy. We spend days on end listening for the tiny buzz of an enemy airplane in the distance or the sound of a thrown bomb. The battlefield is almost always filled to the brim with Shrapnel, the result of bombings. And if you aren't running for your life, you are watching your back for enormous tanks that roam the battlefield. I have witnessed the tanks take a whole trench full of men in a matter of seconds. Their bodies are turned into a plume of thick red blood that fills the air. Machine guns however, are no better. If you get under the sights of one of those and you’re out of luck. Never in my life have I seen a gun take a man so quick. It’s never ending ammo belt preys on soldiers, claiming their souls one by
