Letters and Diaries are considered primary sources. They are directly spoken which is a type of source that allow you to get up close and personal to the writer. These sources reveal how people in the past share the same way we think and feel today. Also, letters and diaries can explain events, places, objects, and religious views through their wording which can give us special, specific detail. Letters and diaries are not always in the type of English format we are use to. Some may be written in different expression styles or languages. Diaries and letters are not like any other type of history source. They don’t give a broader view but simply limit us to a one-person viewpoint. Writing this assignment made me realize how important oral history is. It reveals more than just conversations, it reveals details about time in history, the way of writing in that time period, different living habits, and emotions from different viewpoints. They allow a person to write their own purpose, which I believe is very important. Letters and diaries allow us to gather information about small detail that other sources may not provide. Other sources have a broad view than a single-view point. Although, letters and diaries are harder to imagine and interpret what period it is from or what event it is talking about. It’s up to the reader to figure this out whether it be by finding dates or singling out details that match a point in history. It is important that we learn from letters and diaries because they give us a way to relate to the past. Maybe we use to think, worry, or hope the same way people did years ago. To this day we still write letters and some still have diaries. Letters are used today as a way of communicating with others. Most people who have jobs will receive them from their boss or co-workers talking about their jobs. For instance, when I am in my career, I will receive letters from the hospital explaining important information or upcoming events.
