Letter To Rex Walson On Climate Change

Improved Essays
Dear Rex W. Tillerson CEO, As you must know, climate change is real and well in effect. The sea-level is rising, the ice caps are melting, the ocean is acidifying, and Earth’s temperature is rising at an unprecedented rate. Why, must you ask? We humans have become so powerful and influential that we have changed Earth’s climate and the way Earth works. As the population will continue to grow at a high rate, the need for resources will increase as well. So, you may be asking yourself, why are you reading this letter? Well, Mr. Tillerson, I am writing to you to inform you that long-term, oil is running out and will not be the way to go. We are going to need an alternative to oil, and it is in your best interest to change your practices fast …show more content…
Where this agreement ends, however, is on the question of its reality. Whereas some are convinced that climate change is occurring, others maintain that the evidence claimed is not credible, and thus, believe the concept is not real. After reading Bill Mckibben’s Eaarth, I am convinced that the need for alternative sources will be in your best interest to partake in. It is common knowledge Earth’s population is growing and will continue to grow steadily. Thus, there will be a need for more resources for the growing population. Already, oil is starting to run out, methane is seeping through the permafrost ice sheets and the waves are breaking the expensive levees. We face a huge ecological debt – carbon is accumulating in the atmosphere and is reshaping our planet. What we need is growth and a replacement for our current fossil fuel system; but without the carbon. We really need to cut down on our carbon emissions, produce all electricity from renewable sources, and meet all of the carbon requirements that have been identified. Wind, solar and biofuels should be the way our system should respond, and in large measures. Even recently in the United States, we have discovered more natural gas that could already help us discourage our use of dirty coal. But, the bottom line is: it is expensive, and it would take a long time to replace our current fossil fuel

According to Elizabeth Kolbert, writer of The Sixth Extinction, we as humans are so careless that we are literally driving ourselves into a nonexistence. “Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature” Pp. 1-6 This article features a study that attempts to quantify human effect on global warming and how much we are truly causing. The paper also talks about the need for awareness of global warming to increase worldwide in order for global climate reform efforts to be made. The paper talks about how many false reports on climate change are published, and that knowing the difference between a legitimate and a fake study is important. In the end the paper supports campaigns that contribute to shrinking the consensus gap to help find a general understanding among legitimate scientists.…

Though the opinion of Hansen in itself is not scientific, the expertise of Hansen is not debated so we must take his personal opinions regarding the issue after years of studying climate with some weight. Furthermore, this quote adds to the ethos of McKibben's argument. Finally, to cement his claims with scientific proof, he cites the finding of the International Energy Agency that CO2 emissions rose 31.6 gigatons, up 3.2 percent from the prior…

Gore’s message of the importance of understanding and combating climate change has always been based in scientific fact. If anything, the message of exigency he delivered in his famous PowerPoint presentation in 2006 has proven to be modest. Gore and his team of scientists predicted the number of Hurricanes weighing in as Category 4 and 5 would rise proportionately with the rising sea temperature at the Equator.…

In the article ‘Fewer people would mean fewer worries’, (Geer 2008, p.1) biologist Allen Geer contended that 1. technological solutions to environmental problems are inadequate, and 2. that stabilizing the population at present or lower levels is a durable and easy solution to implement. Therefore, stabilizing the population should be implemented as a solution to environmental problems such as climate change, either in tandem with, or in place of technological solutions. 1.1…

They are also responsible for the Carbon emissions and other hazardous gasses come from burning fossil fuels, however, natural gasses burn cleaner than other fossil fuels like coal and oil. Supporters of fracking conclude that it will not only supply electricity and it is not only abundantly available it is a better alternative to fossil fuels and will produce far fewer carbon emissions. Natural gasses are regarded as ‘bridge fuels’ by many experts and not a final solution to the energy issue that the world has, merely a way to increase the time until technologies for clean energy can be perfected. Renewable energy is still an emerging technology and will take many years to get to a level where it can replace coal, oil, and natural gas. Until such a time, fracking can produce natural gas and provide this ultimate short term solution by lessening the pressure on those responsible for clean energy.…

Imagine a barren wasteland, incapable of supporting the growth of any form of life and overpopulated with more people than it could sustain: this is the future of the earth. But, this is not just another scene from a sci-fi film of a population that has expedited their vital resources, but the reality for the “over 7 billion people” who populate the home we call earth (Hardaway 4). A considerable amount of blame is placed on global warming which is an “increase in the temperature of the lower atmosphere“; however, global warming has not garnered enough acceptance from some political officials and skeptics due to the term’s ambiguity (“global warming”). Global warming is often confused with climate change and although these terms sound alike…

CREDIBILITY : I did an assignment about two different thoughts between two environmentalist : Al Gore and Botkins. Al Gore, with the article “The time to act is now”, informed to the reader how bad global warming is and alerted them the need to react now . I have looked for much research to answer the question by myself as to whether global warming impacts seriously on our life or not and what we can do to protect our living environment. That’s why today I am very interested to share with you some basic information about global warming.…
