Dear Kiarra Elliott (Scholarship and Awards Coordinator):
I am writing today for my cousin to be considered for the Society Little Leaders Award. I am a full-time student currently in my senior year at Bloomfield College majoring in Psychology. While living in New York, I volunteered for DREAM, an organization based in Harlem that provides after-school programs to area students. For two-and-a-half years, I spent two hours per week working with local children on their math, reading, and writing skills. While there, I developed an especially strong relationship with a student named Gio. When I first met him, Gio lacked confidence in his own abilities. Though he also needed to work on his academics, I knew that increasing his self-confidence would do wonders for his school work.…

I encourage an interest in math and science by taking Ari to the science museum, checking out science books and reading them, and doing little science experiments described in some of the books, even if Ari does not seem all that interested sometimes. In first grade, Ari seems to be taking off, and is reading first and even second grade books. I have been finding fun and challenging new books for him to read with my help.…

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for taking your time to consider my candidacy for the Educational Psychology/School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin. I have always been drawn to behavioral psychology, the phenomenon of learning, and educational processes. After discovering that I had a special talent for working with children and at-risk youth, I eagerly began my academic pursuit in elementary education. With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…
