Letter To Jesse Owen Scholarship

Thank you for your support. The joy I felt when I received word that I was a recipient of the Jesse Owen Scholarship was indescribable. I was overwhelmed, dumbfounded. It felt surreal. I knew that this was nothing short of a miracle. My reaction was vastly different than my family’s reaction. Where I was stunned silent, trying to process the news, my mother and grandmother was ecstatic, so full of energy that they were nearly screaming at each other, thanking God and all the goodness in the world. As I reflect on this life changing moment in my life I still feel the same feelings that left me speechless back then. I now realize that in addition to the feeling of joy, I also felt a sense of hope and responsibility.

One day my mother asked me what made me special, why did I study so hard when I wasn’t asked to, why didn’t I follow the easy path like most of my friends? I didn’t know what to tell her. I didn’t see myself as the smartest, or the most deserving. This isn’t to say I didn’t push myself, but I know others who tried just as hard, if not harder, than I did but life got in their way. I know that if things were a little different that they would be writing this paper right now. I like to think, like Sir Isaac Newton, I stand on the shoulders of giants. These giants are my friends, family members, mentors, and supporters that change my life and safe me from committing self-destruction by accepting a false

Growing up my parents allowed me to believe I could do anything I want to in life, and I believed them, and I still somewhat do because I have been privileged from birth. I am very grateful because my parents have provided me with encouragement, countless opportunities for traveling, education, and pretty much anything else I could want. I knew I live an incredibly privileged life, but Rigoberta’s story shocked me based on their expectations for the future, which was a lot worse than I thought was possible. On her tenth birthday, Rigoberta learned from her parents that her life would never amount to anything. She said, “They told me I would have many ambitions…

Elie Wiesel, a man of many words, once said “Let us not forget, after all, that there is always a moment when the moral choice is made. Often because of one one story or one book or one person, we are able to make a different choice, a choice for humanity, for life.” Simple people which one passes carelessly everyday can change another's perspective on the way they view life forever. I have looked up to a lot of different people throughout my years, all being of great wealth and fame, but what I didn’t notice until recently was the one who had the greatest impact on my life was much closer to me than expected. Mirabella, my 10 year old sister was born with an extra chromosome and a hole in her heart so life wasn’t very easy for her straight from the start, but she prevailed.…

My first few attempts at HWC were catastrophic and I was not in the proper headspace to be a successful college student. My GPA had slid under a 2.0 and I was not the ideal candidate for a scholarship.…
