I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI. There were over six hundred pre-nursing students the first semester, so they wanted to narrow it down to the people who truly want to become a nurse and nothing else considering only ninety people get in the nursing program per semester. I considered becoming a doctor but found that a PA profession has many advantages that a MD or DO does not have. I like that PAs can work in several different specialties, whereas a doctor has to do another residency to work in a different field. This is also another reason why I am choosing PA over NP since nurse practitioners tend to specialize more and have less mobility between specialties. I also like the idea of having a supervising physician that I can consult. I do my best work when I am part of a team, working steps ahead of someone else to increase efficiency and outcome. These are just a few reasons why I decided that becoming a physician assistant was best for me.
