It rained almost every afternoon that summer. A fatigued Frank had just gotten home from his job in a coffee shop. With a weary step from the bus, Frank gathered the last of his strength and sprinted across the busy avenue into the old pathway where children played. The rain drops falling onto the shack’s tin, wooden and cardboard roofs would soon become a pool of water from heaven.
Every afternoon Frank’s muffled knock on their three room shack was answered by Carrie, his wife. She would unlock the door and continue to iron more shirts and dresses of people who could afford fancy clothes. When thunder clapped, Carrie would quickly pull the electric cord, thinking it would attract lightning. Then she would prepare dinner. Their three children

After a few weeks of nerves and frustration I finally have found a job. It took me that long only because I did not have the necessary social security number. It’s unbelievable how much money one can make, but just as amazing how quick it goes. I had to pay for the social security number, four weeks of rent, food, and a pair of shoes. The good pair you gave me wore out on our journey to the top of that mountain.

I will get ahead because I’m a better worker than the rest of my countrymen. I can see that already and so does the “boss.” Coming here will be hard for you, leaving Carrie and the children. It was hard enough for me and I’m single without a worry in life. But at least you will have me here if you come and I’m sure I can get you a job. All you’ve heard about the crossing is true. Even the lies are true. “greeting” from your “friends” Tom and Dylan. They are doing fine. They’re already bothering me for the bet you made against the Yankees.
Next time we get together I will relate my adventures and those of my “friends” … things to laugh and cry

And they laughed with open mouths. This caught Frank’s attention. He had wanted to buy a lottery ticket. “Could…? No!” he thought. But he felt a slight flush of blood rush to his face. This could’ve been his lucky day. The one day out of the thousands that he had lived in poverty. The two jumped off the bus, and Frank reached for the newspaper they had left behind. There on the front page was the winning number. At the end of the article was the deadline to claim the prize: 8 pm that night. Frank had kept thinking “maybe this could be the day?” Then he would think “Nah, I shouldn’t, it’ll probably be a waste of money” As he had kept fighting with himself in his mind, he had finally come to a conclusion, he would buy the lottery ticket. Frank had to keep this a secret from Carrie. He had no idea how to though, Carrie knew everything. She would find out about this. Frank had a previous gambling problem and Carrie knew it. She had been the one to help him with it. He couldn’t go behind her back and lie to his wife. Frank knew she would say no, but he had to just tell

Since an early age, I have always wanted to be involved with health sciences, and I have work as hard as I can to accomplish this dream. I was born into a Hispanic family, and raised in way that puts values ahead of money or economic status. I did not enjoy the luxuries that many of my friends had, but I was taught very strong principles. My father always taught me to work hard no matter what, weather it was for a job, school or a hobby. He always told me that I will encounter many rocks in my path, but that it would be up to me to stay behind that rock and let the rock defeat me, or I could just find a way to continue on my path until the next rock.…

Jackson amplifies the subtle hints she includes as it could lead readers wondering why is Mr. Adams so anxious to get back to his place and why is he avoiding his family, revealing her ominous tone. Further along the story, as one of the members had to select a paper from the black box since Bill Hutchinson received the marked paper, “Nancy and Bill,Jr., opened theirs at the same time, and they both beamed and laughed, turning around to the crowd and holding their slips of paper above their heads.”(33). The words “beamed and laughed” usually connotes to a positive meaning. In this context, Jackson sheds the possibility of the lottery being beneficial to the selected contender as she portrays these words as a sense of relief. Typically, people tend to beam and laugh when they have been excused from a reprimand or are relieved from a possible consequence.…

Throughout the entire work, the author uses foreshadowing, and quotes that transmit the mood of tragedy. “The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions: most of them were quiet, wetting their lips, not looking around.” Being a dystopian fiction The Lottery was meant to…

The Lottery,” written by Shirley Jackson in 1948, is an interesting, dark short story. Shirley Jackson fills her short story with imagery, irony, suspense, symbolism, and foreshadowing. The story is about a town full of villagers holding a lottery. However, the story has situational irony due to the normal idea that the lottery is a prize of joyfulness. However, Shirley Jackson creates a new, not typical lottery that has a deeper and darker meaning.…

At first, the story was very complicated to understand, because the author is very descriptive and while I was reading the text, I had a presentiment of uncertainty. Then, I took my time to read it and now, I think it’s clearer in my head. Normally, the lottery is a fun event, but not in this short story. It really surprised me that we are talking about stoning and death at the end of it. I think the author wanted us to understand what was really happening, only in the end.…

For my short essay, I have chosen to write about The Lottery. The lottery to me provides epic amount of material to write about in this essay. In this essay, I would like to contribute my take on what I believe what Shirley Jackson meant by her characterization of character presented in this short story as well as try my hand at trying to decipher the message she was attempting to get across from her conflict and ending. First, Shirley Jackson describe boys playing with stones on a nice summer day while the girls look on, fathers discuss “men” things, and mothers discussing “women” things while reuniting with their husbands.…
